  • Patent number: 4657946
Abstract: Cationically charged water soluble vinyl addition polymers and condensation polymers provide improved emulsification of alkenyl succinic anhydride sizing agents. Sized paper products prepared from alkenyl succinic anhydride emulsions made with the polymers have superior ink holdout.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 16, 1985
Date of Patent: April 14, 1987
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
Inventors: Dominic S. Rende, Michael D. Breslin
  • Patent number: 4414060
Abstract: A process for sulfite pulping of wood of the type which comprises sulfite pulping wood chips in the presence of a catalytic amount of a water-soluble molybdenum containing compound, the improvement which comprises using as the source of water-soluble molybdenum containing compound molybdenum sulfide which is added to the sulfite pulping process at a point whereby it is oxidized to an oxide of molybdenum prior to being added to the chip digester.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: January 8, 1982
Date of Patent: November 8, 1983
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical
    Inventor: Dominic S. Rende
  • Patent number: 4347103
Abstract: The addition of catalytic amounts of molybdenum introduced as a water-soluble molybdenum compound to the sulfite-pulping liquors, substantially increases the rate of lignin removal during chip digestion. By the use of this catalyst, the time required to delignify softwood chips in sulfite liquor at a maximum pulping temperature of 135.degree. C. is reduced to approximately 75% of that necessary to remove the same amount of lignin without a catalyst.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 14, 1980
Date of Patent: August 31, 1982
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
    Inventor: Dominic S. Rende
  • Patent number: 4255233
Abstract: Improved pulp strength and brightness of chemically produced pulp can be obtained by treating the pulp with the addition of 0.05--0.5% based on the weight of the dry fiber of polyacrylic acid and/or its water-soluble salts in the chlorination bleaching stages.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 18, 1979
Date of Patent: March 10, 1981
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
Inventors: Dominic S. Rende, David R. Cosper
  • Patent number: 4244780
Abstract: Inproved pulp strength and brightness of chemically produced pulp can be obtained by treating the pulp with the addition of 0.05-0.5% based on the weight of the dry fiber of thiourea dioxide in the chlorination or hypochlorite bleaching stages.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 15, 1979
Date of Patent: January 13, 1981
    Assignee: Nalco Chemical Company
