    Abstract: Apparatus and a method are disclosed for measuring the softening temperature of a specimen of a thermoplastic material such as glass. Pressure is applied through a rod to the specimen as the specimen is heated to at least its softening temperature. When the rod penetrates a predetermined distance into the softened specimen, the temperature of the specimen is measured.
