  • Patent number: 6508099
Abstract: A hemming machine is disclosed having a base, a nest adapted to support a part to be hemmed, a nest carrier which supports the nest and in which both the nest and nest carrier are vertically movably mounted to the base. At least one hemming die is laterally slidably mounted to the base and movable between an extended position in which the die overlies a portion of the nest, and a retracted position in which the die is spaced laterally outwardly from the nest. A lock unit selectively locks the nest carrier against vertical movement relative to the base in at least one, and preferably two positions, so that, with the nest carrier locked against movement relative to the base, inflation of a hydraulic bladder sandwiched between the nest and nest carrier displaces the nest vertically upwardly from the carrier so that the part carried by the nest is compressed against the hemming dies and performs the hemming operation.

  • Patent number: 6505726
Abstract: A “soft touch” lifter for an automotive “Body in White” geometry station like a framing system is disclosed having a unique lifting assembly for elevating both the automotive body and the underbody tooling to a geometry position. The system includes a lift assembly which is vertically slidably mounted to a stationary base and movable between a first position in which the lift frame is positioned beneath a skid positioned at the geometry station and upon which the automotive body is supported, and a second position elevated from the first position. An underbody tooling assembly is mounted to the lift frame, and this tooling assembly includes a plurality of locators which register with position receptors on the automotive underbody when the skid is positioned at the geometry station.

A pair of T-shaped lift arms are slidably mounted to the stationary base at opposite ends of the skid, and these lift arms are movable between a lower and an upper position.

  • Publication number: 20020131854
Abstract: A workpiece loader/unloader system for an industrial machine, such as a hemmer, is disclosed. The system includes a single pocket shuttle movable between an extended position in which the shuttle overlies a work station on the industrial machine, and a retracted position in which the shuttle is laterally spaced from the work station. A gripper on the shuttle selectively engages and supports the workpiece after the workpiece has been machined at the work station. A loader manipulator is movable between a preload position in which the loader supports an unmachined workpiece at a position laterally spaced from the work station, and a load position in which the loader manipulator overlies the work station. An actuator moves the loader manipulator between the preload and load position.

  • Patent number: 6349480
Abstract: A tool which facilitates the alignment of a closure striker with a latch on an automotive panel in which the automotive panel includes at least one alignment opening. The tool includes a plate having an outwardly projecting alignment pin(s) which is positioned within the alignment opening(s) on the automotive panel. A pair of spaced supports are secured to and extend outwardly from the other side of the plate and thus away from the automotive panel. An elongated guide rod is secured to and extends between the supports so that the guide rod is substantially parallel to the side of the plate abutting the automotive panel. A slide is longitudinally movably mounted on the guide rod and carries a striker to be secured to the automotive panel. A centering pin aligned with the striker is mounted to the slide. The latch on the automotive panel abuts against the centering pin when the panel is moved to a preset partially closed position.

  • Patent number: 6322053
Abstract: A force multiplying device is provided for use in conjunction with a balancing system for moving a load from an elevated position and to a predetermined lower position. The balancing system includes an extendable cable with a free end adapted to be secured to and exert an upward force on the load. The device includes a base which is secured to the load and a first lever pivotally secured at an intermediate point to the base about a generally horizontal axis. A fixed length flexible member has one end secured to a first end of the lever and a second end fixedly secured to a support position above the load. The length of the flexible member is such that the flexible member is in a fully extended position when the load is in the predetermined lower position. An elongated rocker arm has a first end in abutment with the base while the cable from the balancing system is secured to a second end of the rocker arm.

  • Patent number: 6291951
Abstract: A holding brake control circuit is provided for use in conjunction with a servo-motor having an electrically operated holding brake. The holding brake has a pair of electric brake terminals and the brake is retained in a released condition as long as at least a preset brake voltage is maintained to the brake terminals. The holding brake control circuit includes a pair of output terminals connected to the electric brake terminals as well as a pair of power input terminals electrically connected to an electric power source. The electric power source, furthermore, has a higher voltage than the preset brake voltage. At least one capacitor is electrically connected in parallel with the input terminals so that the capacitor charges when power is applied to the input terminals. A voltage regulator has power inputs connected in parallel with the capacitor and a regulated voltage output connected in parallel with the output terminals for the control circuit.

  • Patent number: 4946089
Abstract: For precisely positioning a vehicle body relative to robots which spot weld the vehicle body, the vehicle body is mounted on a lower tool which is rigidly connected to front and rear upper tools which are selected from a tool magazine as a function of the geometry of the vehicle body. All of the tools are rigidly connected to one another to form a rigid annular structure surrouding the body and alone capable of positioning the body.
