  • Publication number: 20220212982
Abstract: Low-cost and robust platforms are key for the development of next-generation 3D micro- and nanodevices. To fabricate such platforms, nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) is a highly appealing material due to its biocompatibility, robustness, and mechanical, electrical, electrochemical, and optical properties, while glass substrates with through vias are ideal interposers for 3D integration due to the excellent properties of glass. A low-cost process—free of photolithography and transfer printing—for fabricating arrays of TGVs that are sealed with suspended portions of an ultra-thin NCD film on one side is presented. These highly transparent structures may serve as a platform for the development of microwells for single-cell culture and analysis, 3D integrated devices such as microelectrodes, and quantum technologies. It is also possible to replace the NCD with silicon nitride or silicon carbide, allowing for the development of complex heterogeneous structures on a small scale.

  • Patent number: 10989473
Abstract: A lining structure for a refractory vessel contains a first layer containing refractory material; a second layer, in communication with and parallel to the first layer, containing a metal layer or component; and a third layer, in communication with and parallel to the second layer, containing refractory material. The metal component in the second layer contains filled transverse passages, between the surface of the second layer in contact with the first layer and the surface of the second layer in contact with the third layer, producing support structures to maintain the structural integrity of the refractory vessel in use.

  • Patent number: 10507523
Abstract: A lining for a metallurgical vessel is configured to have an engineered porosity. The lining contains a plurality of regions, each extending in a primary plane of the lining, each region having a differing value of total pore or perforation area as measured in a primary plane of the lining. The lining may be used to form part or all of the working surface of the floors or walls of the vessel. In casting use the lining produces an oxidation buffering layer at an interphase of metal melt extending from the interface between metal melt and the walls and floor of the metallurgical vessel, such that when in casting use, the metal flow rate in said oxidation buffering layer is substantially nil, and the concentration of endogenous inclusions, in particular oxides, in said oxidation buffering layer is substantially higher than in the bulk of the metal melt.

  • Patent number: 9255893
Abstract: An apparatus for illuminating monocrystalline and polycrystalline substrates in order to image micro cracks, pinholes and inclusions in the substrates is disclosed. A first illumination system illuminates a first line of light on the front surface of the substrate. A second illumination system illuminates a second line of light on the front surface of the substrate. The first line of light and the second line of light are oriented transverse to the transport direction (T). The second illumination system is arranged within a 3-dimensional coordinate system such that the substrate is illuminated under a second angle. The arrangement of the second illumination system is comparable to a street lamp. A camera, preferably a camera, is arranged such that it faces the back surface of the substrate. The camera captures light which is transmitted through the substrate from the first illumination system and the second illumination system.

  • Publication number: 20060135345
Abstract: A permeable, resin-bonded composition is described, which finds utility as a porous element in a gas-injection nozzle. The permeable composition is notably useful in a canless, resin-bonded, gas-injection nozzle, characterized by an impermeable, resin-bonded composition replaces the metal can. Advantageously, the resin-bonded compositions include an oxygen getter for scrubbing oxygen before the oxygen can reach the molten steel. A method of manufacturing the nozzle is described and includes copressing a standard, resin-bonded composition around the permeable, resin-bonded composition. The pressed piece may be cured at temperatures below about 800° C.

  • Patent number: 5723055
Abstract: A refractory nozzle assembly is provided that effectively prevents the accumulation of alumina deposits around its upper edge where it receives a stopper rod. The nozzle assembly includes a refractory nozzle body having an upper and a lower portion. A bore extends through both the upper and lower portions that has a receiving and a discharge end for receiving and discharging molten metal. An inert gas distributor circumscribes the upper portion of the nozzle body. A sleeve of gas-obstructing refractory material covers the walls of the bore, and defines a seat portion at an upper portion of the bore. A metal sheath substantially surrounds the outer surface of the upper portion. Pressurized inert gas conducted to the upper, gas permeable portion of the nozzle body by the gas-distributing assembly is guided by the gas-obstructing sleeve and the metal sheath so that it flows predominantly through the top edge of the upper portion.

  • Patent number: 5431374
Abstract: A unitized nozzle and top plate assembly for use in a slide gate valve is disclosed which comprises a nozzle having porous, gas permeable walls, a top plate having an opening through its thickness for regulating a flow of molten metal, such as steel, and a recess circumscribing the opening for receiving and securing the discharge end of the nozzle to the top plate. The depth of the recess is at least 50%, and preferably 70-80% of the thickness of the top plate in order to minimize the contact between molten metal and the surface of the top plate opening, which in turn reduces the amount of flow-obstructing alumina deposits which accumulate in this area of the slide gate valve. To prevent leaks from occurring in the system supplying pressurized argon through the porous nozzle walls, the gas coupling that is normally welded directly to the steel can surrounding the nozzle is instead mounted on the end of a steel pipe connected to the can.
