  • Patent number: 8574388
Abstract: A method and device for automated manufacture of an elongated composite material part having at least one layer. The method includes depositing, by unrolling onto a mold, in a first direction, along the mold, an assembly having a composite material layer separably attached to a substrate tape, and forming and compacting part of the assembly onto the mold in the first direction. The assembly is partially shaped to the shape of the mold, and then a remaining portion of the assembly is formed and compacted in a second direction, opposite the first direction, to shape the assembly completely to the shape of the mold. Then the assembly is separated, by peeling the substrate tape from the composite material layer that is secured to the mold, by unrolling the substrate tape in the second direction.

  • Patent number: 8382467
Abstract: A multiple part mandrel on which a hollow body may be formed includes multiple sectors. Each sector has a skin on an outer face and a pair of opposed side returns at longitudinal sides of the sector. The mandrel formed by the sectors is symmetrical about a central axis of the mandrel. When the sectors are assembled as the mandrel, the side returns of adjacent sectors face each other. Each of the side returns includes a recess in an outside surface of the side return, spaced from the skin of the respective sector, and an inflatable O-ring disposed in the recess. The recesses of adjacent side returns in the mandrel are offset with respect to each other in an axial direction of the mandrel. Inflation of the inflatable O-rings urges adjacent sectors together at the skins of the sectors to seal the adjacent sectors at the skins.

  • Publication number: 20100032862
Abstract: A tool of a composite material for making a cylindrical part of a composite material. The tool is used for forming a mandrel on which the cylindrical part is to be formed. The tool comprises a set of members, each member defining a cylindrical sector of the tool, each member having a bearing structure of a fiber composite and a skin molded on the bearing structure. The tool further includes a seal located at the junctions between the tool members.

  • Patent number: 4476206
Abstract: A grid (10) for the plate of an electrical storage cell, eg. a lead-acid accumulator, comprises two orthogonal sets of conductive bars (7, 8) together with a current collector tab (9). The grid is made from a loosely-woven cloth comprising both bundles of conductive threads outlining the bars and the current collector of the plate, and bundles of non-conductive threads (6) serving to position said conductive threads relative to one another and to maintain them in position. Said bundles of conductive threads are embedded in a metal matrix comprising at least one of the metals in the group constituted by: lead, copper, cadmium, and nickel.

  • Patent number: 4410577
Abstract: Individual plies of woven cloth having different fiber orientation patterns are prelocated with respect to each other and by continuous means, such plies are arranged into a stacked package and sewn together to secure the plies in a predetermined position with respect to each other.

  • Patent number: 4379798
Abstract: Three-dimensional non-crimp integral woven reinforcement for structural components formed as an integral woven assembly of warp and fill fibers, e.g. graphite fibers, in a multiplicity of layers, with light weight tie yarn, e.g. of fiberglass, passing from one side of the layered system to the other. Woven reinforcement forms of various shapes such as an I-beam can be produced by using a specified percentage of 0.degree. (warp) fibers and 90.degree. (fill) fibers, e.g. of graphite, to form a plurality of layers comprising the web and flanges of the I-beam reinforcement, and having the desired number of layers and thickness in both the web and flanges, and passing tie yarn, e.g. of fiberglass, back and forth from one side of the web to the other, and in the same manner from one side of the flanges to the other, and extending lengthwise in the warp direction of the material. The woven assembly is then impregnated with resin, e.g.

  • Patent number: 4368234
Abstract: Complex woven material as reinforcement for forming layered resin impregnated articles which are resistant to catastrophic damage from shock or local impact as from a hard object, comprised of woven bands or strips of high modulus fibers such as carbon or graphite fibers, separated in at least one direction of the material, from each other by woven bands or strips of low modulus fibers such as glass fibers, and which in a preferred embodiment are narrower than the strips of high modulus fibers. Superimposed layers of such materials can be formed, wherein the strips of high modulus fibers and low modulus fibers in the respective layers are at different angles. Such woven materials, e.g. in the form of a layered assembly, are impregnated with a suitable thermosetting resin such as an epoxy resin, and cured, to produce a layered resin impregnated article having improved damage tolerant physical and mechanical properties.
