  • Patent number: 5896925
Abstract: According to the present invention, there is provided a device for guiding a tool on a string within a blow out prevention ("BOP") stack. In one embodiment, the device includes a top collar connected to a bottom collar by a shroud having a plurality of flexible members which bow outwardly from the collars, wherein the shroud covers a portion of the tool. An energy absorbing bumper is provided above the top collar to absorb structural impact caused by a blow out or other inadvertant pressure in a downhole application.

  • Patent number: 5732731
Abstract: In combination with a gate valve comprising a valve body having an internal cavity extending between an inlet port and an outlet port, a bonnet mounted to the valve body and having an internal passageway in communication with the cavity, a valve stem rotationally supported in the passageway, a handle connected to one end of the valve stem and a gate threadedly connected to the other end of the valve stem, the improvement comprising a first packing for sealing between the bonnet and the valve stem to prevent pressure within the cavity from escaping through the passageway, a second packing for sealing between the bonnet and the valve stem to prevent pressure within the cavity from escaping through the passageway, the second packing being located between the first packing and the cavity, a bypass port extending between a first portion of the passageway below the second packing and a second portion of the passageway above the second packing, and a bypass valve for selectively closing the bypass port such that the

  • Patent number: 4848777
Abstract: A casing seal for use with a source of high pressure fluids with apparatus for preventing shredding of the seal with variations in fluid pressure. A T-shaped annular metal ring provides a multiplication of fluid pressure so pressure exerted on an elastomeric sealing ring is greater than the fluid pressure. This multiplication prevents gases from entering the elastomer and prevents shredding of the elastomer when pressure is released. The multiplication of pressure also forces the elastomer firmly against a casing and a casing head to provide a fluid-tight seal.

  • Patent number: 4711262
Abstract: A gate valve includes a pressure relief port located on the gate valve. When the gate is positioned such that the port communicates with one of the two flow passages and the valve body interior, uni-directional flow is permitted from the other of the flow passages. Flow is blocked bi-directionally when the port is positioned out of communication with the flow passage.
