Publication number: 20020023751Abstract: A method of heating gas being produced in a well reduces condensate occurring in the well. A cable assembly having at least one insulated conductor is deployed into the well while the well is still live. Electrical power is applied to the conductor to cause heat to be generated. Gas is allowed up past the cable assembly and out the wellhead. The heat retards condensation, which creates frictional losses in the gas flow.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 27, 2001Publication date: February 28, 2002Inventors: David H. Neuroth, Phillip R. Patent number: 6328111Abstract: A method for installing a submersible pump assembly that allows deployment in a live well under pressure. In some of the embodiments, a pressure barrier is installed in the well lower than a length of the submersible pump assembly. The submersible pump assembly is lowered on a line into the chamber, then a lubricator at the surface seals around the line by allowing the pressure barrier to be released and the submersible pump assembly to be lowered into the well to a desired depth. Preferably, there is a lower pressure barrier in the well. The upper pressure barrier may be a packer that may be collapsed and retrieved alongside the submersible pump assembly. The pressure barrier also may be a packer that is temporarily set in the well, then engaged by the submersible pump assembly, with the pump assembly and packer then being lowered as a unit to a further depth in the well.Type: GrantFiled: September 27, 1999Date of Patent: December 11, 2001Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: John L. Patent number: 6143988Abstract: An electrical line for installation in a well for transmitting power to a well pump includes a string of coiled tubing. An electrical cable having insulated electrical conductors embedded within an elastomeric jacket extends longitudinally through the interior passage of the tubing. Retainers are mounted to the electrical cable and spaced longitudinally apart from each other. An indentation is integrally formed in the tubing adjacent each of the retainers. Each indentation protrudes into the interior passage of the tubing and creates a ledge which is contacted by one of the retainers when the electrical line is installed in the well. The indentations and retainers transfer weight of the electrical cable to the tubing. Weld material is filled into the depression on the surface created by each indentation.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1998Date of Patent: November 7, 2000Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: David H. Patent number: 5821452Abstract: An electrical line for a well pump has elastomeric supports clamped to the exterior of electrical cable for supporting the cable within coiled tubing. The cable supports have an elastomeric member that swells when contacted with a hydrocarbon liquid. Each expansion member is clamped to the cable exterior by retainers located at the ends. The expansion members are spaced apart longitudinally along the cable, and then the cable is inserted into the coiled tubing. Hydrocarbon liquid is pumped through the coiled tubing to cause the expansion members to swell into frictional engagement with the coiled tubing. The retainers direct the swelling laterally into tight contact with the coiled tubing.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 1997Date of Patent: October 13, 1998Assignee: Baker Hughes IncorporatedInventors: David H. Patent number: 5361834Abstract: A hydraulic release mechanism for retrieving a stock downhole tool from a well casing having an elongated, cylindrical jack body, a piston carried in a bore in the jack body and a latching portion carried co-axially by the jack body for connecting with the stock tool. The piston is movable within the jack body under the influence of fluid pressure from a first position to a second position. The movement of the piston to a position intermediate its first and second positions causes an anchor slip member to ramp over a wedge member and expand radially outward against the well casing to restrain further longitudinal movement of the piston in the casing. A shearable element prevents relative motion between the anchor slip member and the jack body until the anchor slip member is moved radially outward against the well casing.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 1993Date of Patent: November 8, 1994Assignee: Halliburton CompanyInventor: Don C. Patent number: 5027926Abstract: An hydraulically operated slip assembly useful to grip pipe being run into or pulled from a well. This assembly has upper and lower plates, each having a passage for pipe. Wedges, carrying unique slip systems are positioned around the passages between the plates and are slidably mounted for guided radial movement inwardly to initially grip pipe in neutral position and outwardly to ungrip pipe as moved by an hydraulic cylinder pivotally mounted aside on the lower plate. The unique slip systems automatically increase gripping force on initially gripped pipe on more than about 0.7 inches up or down movement from neutral position caused by loads on the pipe. Forces resulting from increased pipe gripping force on pipe develop frictional forces within the slip assembly, which effectively prevent outward movement of the wedges after inadvertent or on purpose operation of the cylinder to ungrip the pipe.Type: GrantFiled: February 26, 1990Date of Patent: July 2, 1991Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventor: Don C. Patent number: 4940118Abstract: An hydraulically operated slip assembly useful to grip pipe being run into or pulled from a well. This assembly has upper and lower plates, each having a passage for pipe. Wedges, carrying unique slip systems are positioned around the passages between the plates and are slidably mounted for guided radial movement inwardly to grip pipe and outwardly to ungrip pipe as moved by an hydraulic cylinder pivotally mounted aside on the lower plate. Patent number: 4576254Abstract: A hydraulically operated slip assembly, connectible to a well head or well pipe handling machine and useful to intermittently grip pipe being run into or pulled from the well. The slip assembly has upper and lower plates with passages for pipe. Wedges, carrying unique slip systems, are positioned around the passages and slidably mounted for radial movement between guide plates extending from the upper and lower plates. The wedges are moved radially inward to grip pipe and radially outward to release pipe by a hydraulic cylinder, pivotally mounted aside the lower plate. When actuated to extend, the hydraulic cylinder rotates an inner bearing race and attached camming segments, which move the wedges inwardly to grip pipe. When the cylinder is actuated to contract, the bearing race and camming segments are rotated to pull the wedges outward radially, releasing pipe. The bearing outer race is housed in ring segments between and connecting the slip assembly upper and lower plates.Type: GrantFiled: February 6, 1984Date of Patent: March 18, 1986Assignee: Otis Engineering CorporationInventor: Don C.
