  • Patent number: 7285716
Abstract: An automated player for stringed instruments having a plucking mechanism and a fretting mechanism. The plucking mechanism includes a string contacting portion rotationally mounted relative to a corresponding instrument string with a rotational axis substantially perpendicular to the string, a first drive member for creating relative motion between the string and the string contacting portion. The fretting mechanism includes a carriage in depressive contact with the instrument string and a second drive member selectively positioning the carriage creating relative movement between the carriage and the string. The plucking mechanism and the fretting mechanism are attached to a frame which is attached to the instrument. The player includes an electronic control circuit that controls operation of the plucking and fretting mechanisms.

  • Patent number: 6723904
Abstract: An automated player for stringed instruments having a body portion including independent plucking and fretting mechanisms. The plucking mechanism includes a rotary plectrum assembly having a plurality of extendable quills positioned with its rotational axis parallel to a string of the instrument. The plectrum assembly is selectively rotatable by a first stepper motor and the quills are selectively extendable by an electric solenoid actuator, thus allowing for variable displacement of the string to produce vibration of variable intensity during operation. The fretting mechanism includes a carriage mounted to a belt and selectively driven by a second stepper motor along a track parallel to the instrument string. The carriage is in compressive contact with the string and thus may be selectively positioned at appropriate frets to shorten the vibrating length of the string. The player includes an embedded electronic circuit that controls the operation from programs installed or serially downloaded.

  • Patent number: 5931160
Abstract: A ventilator control system controls a ventilator pneumatic system in a medical ventilator. The ventilator control system includes a user interface, a memory and a processor. The user interface receives input values from a user for setting one or more breath parameters within a set of breath parameters. The user interface can include a display for displaying the status of the patient's pulmonary system and the set of breath parameters. The memory stores the set of breath parameters after the user has set one or more breath parameters to desired input values. The processor simultaneously adjusts a plurality of controls within a ventilator pneumatic system in response to the set of breath parameters. The user can change or implement new phases, breaths, modes or therapies in seconds such that the therapy delivered to the patient is essentially uninterrupted. Also, a simulator may be provided for predicting the status of the patient's pulmonary system prior to adjusting the plurality of controls.

  • Patent number: 5756913
Abstract: A piano tuning system having an electronic control circuit which receives sound through a microphone for a piano key. Based upon a comparison of this sound with stored piano fundamental frequencies, signals are sent to a drive unit. An electrically driven drive unit has a push/pull solenoid with an actuator which can move an internal drive shaft along a spline shaft. Movement of the drive shaft with respect to associated clutches moves any of three worm gears, each having dependent tuning head wrenches which turn the piano's tuning pins. Adjustments may be made to the spacing between worm gears to squeeze or expand their relative positions with respect to each other by an external housing thumb wheel. A method for implementing the tuning of piano notes is also set forth.
