  • Patent number: 6501439
Abstract: An antenna assembly including a resonator element which is operatively connected to the ground plane of a wireless communication device (WCD) is described. The resonator element comprises a flexible resonator support substrate of dielectric material which supports a conductive element or portion. The flexible nature of the substrate facilitates coupling to the ground plane of a WCD at a variety of locations including the interior, the exterior, or within a portion of the housing of the WCD itself. The resonator element may be provided with a dielectric support element which operatively connects the resonator element to the ground plane of a printed wiring board of a WCD. The support element includes a predetermined support edge portion which helps maintain the resonator element in a preferred predetermined shape, and a bottom edge with a conductive strip portion which is used to operatively connect the support element to a ground plane.

  • Patent number: 6429818
Abstract: A compact single or multiple band antenna assembly for wireless communications devices. One multi-band embodiment includes a high frequency portion and a low frequency portion, both fed at a common point by a single feed line. Both portions may be formed as a single stamped metal part or metallized plastic part. The overall size is suitable for integration within a wireless device such as a cell phone. The low frequency portion consists of two resonant sections which are stagger tuned to achieve a wide resonant bandwidth, thus allowing greater tolerance for manufacturing variations and temperature than a single resonant section, and is useful for single band antennas as well as multi-band antennas where it may be used to enhance bandwidth for both sections of a dual band antenna as well. The resonant sections for single or multi-band antennas operate in conjunction with a second planar conductor, which may be provided by the ground trace portion of the printed wiring board of a wireless communications device.

  • Patent number: 6239765
Abstract: An asymmetric dipole antenna assembly is provided for wireless communications devices, and includes separate upper and lower conductor traces and a low impedance feedpoint at the junction of the conductor traces. The upper conductor trace may include a matching network and may be printed on a planar printed circuit board mounted proximate the top of the a hand-held wireless transceiver. The upper conducting trace provides ¼ wave resonance over a desired frequency range and a 50 ohm input impedance for the antenna. The lower conductor trace may be provided by the ground trace of the wireless device circuitry, requiring only a minimum effective trace length of ¼ wavelength at the lowest frequency of operation. Polarization of the antenna is determined by the orientation of the longest dimension of the lower conductor.
