  • Publication number: 20060115611
Abstract: The present invention provides for a one-pack primer-sealer composition for molded SMC parts such as automotive body panels that significantly reduces paint defects (such as paint pop and cracking defects) in the sealing and automotive OEM finishing operations. The coating composition includes silane and melamine components. The composition is sufficiently stable to be formulated as a one-pack coating composition.

  • Patent number: 7019070
Abstract: An aqueous coating composition having a pH of 6.0–10.0 comprises 30% to 70% by weight of film-forming binder and correspondingly 70% to 30% by weight of an aqueous liquid carrier for the binder; wherein the binder comprises a. 20% to 95% by weight, based on the weight of the binder, of a urethane oligomer having a weight average molecular weight of 300 to 2500 and having acid functionality and neutralized with an amine and to form a water-dispersible product; and b. 5% to 80% by weight, based on the weight of the binder, of a water-compatible alkylated melamine formaldehyde crosslinking agent; finishes formed from the composition have good gloss and distinctness of image and excellent acid etch and mar resistance.

  • Publication number: 20060051594
Abstract: An acrylic oligomer useful in a two stage curing coating composition having a weight average molecular weight of 100 to 3000, a polydispersity of 1.01 to 1.7 and one or more reactive functionalities reactive with isocyanate groups and having 7.0 to 40.0 weight percent, based on the weight of the acrylic oligomer, of hydroxyl moieties wherein at least 40.0 to 70.0 weight percent of the hydroxyl moieties are provided by hydroxy butyl acrylate and the remaining hydroxyl moieties are provided by fast reacting hydroxyl constituents of hydroxy ethyl acrylate, hydroxy ethyl methacrylate or any mixtures thereof and by slow reacting hydroxyl constituents of secondary hydroxyl containing hydroxy propyl acrylate and secondary hydroxyl containing hydroxy propyl methacrylate and any mixtures thereof.

  • Publication number: 20060025522
Abstract: This invention relates to a thermosetting primer composition having a low VOC content useful in the manufacture of automobiles and trucks in which the film-forming binder comprises a thermal polymerization initiator and an addition-polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomer which serves a dual function of solvent and binder polymer formed in situ on thermal curing to deliver low VOC and desired rheological and physical properties. These primers are especially useful in reducing emissions, while also meeting today's performance requirements, such as ease of application and excellent physical properties such as corrosion resistance, a high level of adhesion to primed and unprimed substrates, and provide a surface to which conventional automotive topcoats will adhere.

  • Publication number: 20060025534
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved solvent based high solids thermosetting coating composition having a low VOC content useful in the manufacture of automobiles and trucks comprising a film-forming binder, where the improvement is the inclusion in the binder of an addition-polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound and an effective amount of thermal free radical initiator to effect polymerization of the addition-polymerizable component using heat. The addition-polymerizable compound serves a dual function of solvent and auxiliary crosslinking agent for the coating system to deliver low VOC and desired rheological and physical properties. These coatings are especially useful in reducing emissions, while also meeting today's performance requirements for automotive topcoats, such as ease of application and excellent durability and appearance. No actinic radiation is needed to effect polymerization of the addition-polymerizable compound.

  • Publication number: 20050074617
Abstract: A film-forming coating composition, typically a topcoat, having improved adhesion. The composition includes a film-forming binder comprising a carbamate material, a curing agent, typically a melamine curing agent, and a hydroxy functional silane component. When used as a clearcoat over a standard pigmented basecoat, the resulting coating provides excellent adhesion to both windshield sealants and additional repair coatings.

  • Patent number: 6767642
Abstract: Acrylosilane polymers containing vinyl silanes are prepared by copolymerizing vinyl alkoxy silane monomers predominantly with, or in the alternative, only with acrylate monomers. The polymer so prepared can be used as the main component in the acid etch resistant solvent borne coating compositions and in particular in clear coating compositions for clear coat/color coat finishes for automobiles and trucks.
