  • Patent number: 6697626
Abstract: Channel loading statistics are collected to allow a wireless transceiver communicating on one channel to make an educated decision about whether to seek another channel when interference occurs. All of the available channels are monitored to determine whether any of the channels are idle, and data about the idle channels is accumulated. The transceiver can use the accumulated data to determine whether any of the channels are idle at any given time. The transceiver is allowed to seek another channel if the data indicates that the transceiver is likely to find an idle channel, e.g., if a Gaussian statistical analysis of the data indicates with a given level of confidence that more than a given number of channels will be idle.

  • Publication number: 20030179830
Abstract: A system for pre-distorting samples derived from modulated data symbols to compensate, at least in part, for non-linear operation of a power amplifier in a power-constrained remote relay station. A symbol mapper maps successive renderings of an input alphabet into successive modulation symbols such as but not limited to 16-QAM or 64-QAM symbols. Pre-distortion logic pre-distorts samples derived from the symbols, and logic incorporates samples derived from the pre-distorted samples into a transmission signal. The transmission signal is amplified and transmitted over a communications link to the remote relay station. The system may employ a feedback loop to measure the amount of residual distortion still present is a signal relayed from the relay station and derived from the transmission signal.

  • Patent number: 6591382
Abstract: A system and method for providing improved performance using TCP/IP protocols over wireless networks that can be implemented entirely within the link layer of a protocol stack. The system and method responds to low signal levels caused by weak and fading wireless connections by maintaining throughput and circumventing inappropriate instances of TCP/IP congestion avoidance mode. At least two selectable service protocols, comprising at least one selectable basic error-detecting/correcting protocol and at least one selectable robust error-detecting/correcting protocol, are implemented within link layers of both the mobile station and the base station. A quality of service monitor installed within the link layer monitors signal quality. When the quality of service monitor detects a signal quality that falls below a predetermined threshold or predicts a future signal degradation, the mobile station switches to the robust error-detecting/correcting service protocol and informs the base station of the changeover.

  • Patent number: 6256477
Abstract: A wireless receiver is capable of detecting and avoiding interference from a potentially interfering transmitter. The receiver includes circuitry that determines whether a signal from the potentially interfering transmitter is likely to overlap an expected signal at an assigned carrier frequency or channel. If so, the receiver switches to another carrier frequency or channel to receive the expected signal. In some embodiments, the receiver switches to the other carrier frequency only if the interference is likely to exceed a predetermined threshold.
