  • Patent number: 6176650
Abstract: An apparatus for cutting a bore in a device includes a boring assembly having a cutting device coupled to a housing. A control system selectively floats the housing above a mounting surface, thereby allowing the housing and associated cutting device to be moved along the mounting surface to a selected position. The control system also selectively clamps the housing to the support surface and selectively tilts the housing to move the cutting device away from a wall of the bore cut by the cutting device.

  • Patent number: 5349900
Abstract: A dual-axis table assembly has left and right sector plates mounted on the underside of a table. Each sector plate is seated on a respective left and right pair of shoes which are mounted on a base. A left handwheel operates to turn the left sector for front/rear table tilting, and a right handwheel operates to change the distance between the right pair of shoes for right/left table tilting. A clamp mechanism grips the left sector wheel when the table is locked in adjusted position.

  • Patent number: 5255901
Abstract: A fixturing system for mounting engine blocks on a dual-axis table with T-ways in preparation for machining has two rear support units, a front support unit, and a front screw jack unit, on which the engine block is mounted. These units are adjustably clamped to the table by T-nuts. The two rear support units provide an adjustable vertical stem having an enlarged tapered head for engaging a rear portion of the engine block. The front of the engine block is engaged by the head of a clamping screw mounted on an adjustable bracket clamped against a slide block in turn clamped to the table.

  • Patent number: 4792265
Abstract: A surfacing and boring machine for reconditioning engine blocks has a front stationary work table, a traveling column on rails provided by an elongated rigid base, a power head unit on the column adjustable in an air float condition to move an overhanging spindle forwardly and rearwardly, and mechanisms in the power head unit to independently move a spindle carrier vertically and to rotate the spindle at selected speeds. Clamping devides are provided to independently clamp the power head unit to the traveling column and the column to the base rails. A quick-change unit is located in the spindle for the tools.

  • Patent number: 4789279
Abstract: An engine block reboring system for main bearings in which the block is mounted on a pair of rails extending laterally on a workbed and is rebored by a tool driven by a right-angle drive extension on a vertical boring machine after the position of the block has been adjusted so that the vertical axis of the boring machine spindle and the desired reboring axis are in the same vertical plane, and the proper height for the tool is set for reference, so that the bearings can be rebored by manipulating the spindle vertically and horizontally in said vertical plane with respect to the height reference. Apparatus is provided for initially properly aligning the block and keeping it in aligned position during the reboring operation.

  • Patent number: 4557640
Abstract: A boring unit and a honing unit are concurrently carried on the bed of a boring machine for performing boring and honing operations on the cylinder bores of an engine block. A unique clamping technique is employed to clamp the engine block to the bed of the boring machine while the honing device is operating on the furthest most cylinder bore and adjacent the boring unit.

  • Patent number: 4541620
Abstract: An improved sled for fixturing engine blocks includes an inclined mounting surface which can be supported at alternate inclinations for fixturing engine blocks having various V-angles. A preferred embodiment utilizes a two-way frame which is removably mounted on the sled for supporting various V-blocks with the main bearing cap in place. Air float means are also preferably provided for lifting the sled above a supporting surface to facilitate maneuvering the sled. One preferred embodiment includes a novel means of aligning and securing an engine block on the sleds which includes a sling for rotatably engaging and lifting a block.

  • Patent number: 4189871
Abstract: A "beam stroker" type of honing machine which can, at the operator's option, be power stroked by means of a double-acting pneumatic cylinder or manually stroked. Both travel limits can be varied by the operator. A hydraulic double-acting cylinder system functions to limit the stroking speed and has a needle valve adjustment to vary the speed.

  • Patent number: 4168826
Abstract: A fixture for holding V-type engine blocks during cylinder honing or other refinishing operations has a stationary stand assembly and a removable clamping assembly which can be applied to an engine block at a location remote from the stand assembly and presents a lifting eye so that the clamping assembly and engine block can be hoisted as a unit, transported and lowered into the stand assembly whereupon the clamping assembly can be selectively pivoted from side to side and locked to vertically present the selected bank of cylinders.
