  • Patent number: 4028220
Abstract: The present invention relates to hydrogenative extraction of coal, and relates to a process which comprises treating coal with water and carbon monoxide at a temperature within the range of 300.degree. to 380.degree. C., venting the gases to atmospheric pressure at the end of the treatment and thereafter extracting the hydrogenated coal with an extractant in the gas phase at a temperature of at least 400.degree. C and thereafter separating the solid residue from the gas phase, recovering the coal extract from the extractant.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 15, 1975
Date of Patent: June 7, 1977
    Assignee: Coal Industry (Patents) Limited
    Inventor: Donald Bremner Urquhart
  • Patent number: 4019975
Abstract: The invention relates to the hydrogenation of coal which comprises extracting the coal with a solvent at temperatures and pressures above the critical temperature and pressure of the solvent in the presence of hydrogen and an effective amount of catalyst comprising a salt or oxide of a metal which is not a noble metal and which is liquid or solid at the extraction temperature. The gas phase solvent may then be separated from the solid residue and the hydrogenated products condensed therefrom by cooling.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 29, 1974
Date of Patent: April 26, 1977
    Assignee: Coal Industry (Patents) Limited
    Inventor: Donald Bremner Urquhart
  • Patent number: 3997424
Abstract: The invention relates to the hydrogenative treatment of coals by contacting the coal with carbon monoxide, water and a gaseous organic solvent at a reaction temperature within the range 300.degree.-500.degree. C. The solvent comprises one or more solvent components each of which, at the reaction temperature, is above its critical temperature so that the reaction products are extracted in the gaseous phase and are thereafter recovered from said phase after separation from the solid residue within the reaction chamber.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 12, 1974
Date of Patent: December 14, 1976
    Assignee: Coal Industry (Patents) Limited
    Inventor: Donald Bremner Urquhart
