    Abstract: A rider roll system for exerting an even nip load force along the surface of a roll of paper being wound from a continuous on-coming web in a winder comprises a plurality of rider roll wheel elements, each of which is connected to a common source of hydraulic pressure to provide the same rolling nip force against the wound paper roll. The rider roll wheel elements are mounted to a beam which is translationally movable above the wound paper roll. The beam and individual rider roll wheel elements are moved upwardly as a function of the increase in the diameter of the wound paper roll. The relationship of the beam movement relative to the diameter of the wound paper roll is controlled by a programmable logic controller. The individual wheel elements are loaded against a counter-balance force so as to provide equal, but cushioned, nip force against the surface of the wound paper roll at short intervals along its length.

    Abstract: A device for slowing cut sheets in seriatum flow by nipping the trailing edge of the sheets as they leave a high-speed conveyor system is provided whereby the sheets pass to a stacking pile at a slow speed. The nipping device is provided in several embodiments including a brush carrying roll, an oscillating roll on a lever arm and an air jet. Ream removal apparatus are also provided to remove reams of paper from the bottom of the stacking pile.

    Abstract: Apparatus for the shingling of cut sheets of paper as they pass between conveyance on a high-speed tape conveyor and a low-speed tape conveyor is provided by a two-stage slowdown arrangement. At the first stage, a slowdown mechanism, comprising two rolls arranged respectively above and below each sheet passing through a drop-off area from the high-speed conveyor to the low-speed conveyor, serves to engage the tail portion of the sheet in a nip such that the sheet is slowed down to a speed approximately 30 to 40% of the speed of the high-speed conveyor. In this manner, the lead edge of a next succeeding sheet overlaps with the trailing edge of the nipped sheet in a drop-off area from the high-speed tape conveyor.

    Abstract: A piling assembly for a sheet stacker utilizes air pressure to corrugate a paper sheet for stiffness and to transport the sheet from a conveyor onto a pile formed against a backstop. The assembly is comprised of a plurality of telescoping rods which overlie the sheet pile and issue air jets in a downward and lateral direction onto the upper surface of a sheet. The mechanism further includes a lift means situated beneath the sheet and directing air against the undersurface of the sheet, so that the sheet can float over the pile as the sheet is jogged against the backstop in the stacker. The backstop is made movable and the telescoping rods are adjustable to accommodate various lengths of sheet in the stacker.

    Abstract: Cooperating slitter blades in a slitter for high bulk traveling paper web material attain high cut point pressure and minimum slit plowing and dusting as a result of critical cooperation of the slitting edges of the blades wherein one of blade edges rotates in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of travel of the web, and the slitting edge of the other of the blades cooperates to a penetration or overlap extent of less than 0.030 inch at a rake angle of 0 to 10 minutes and a toe-in of 5 to 30 minutes. Where the other blade edge is of high angle type an included angle between opposite faces of the edge of 15 to 30 degrees is provided and where a low angle edge is preferred, the included angle between opposite faces of the blade is between 75 and 85 degrees.

    Abstract: An apparatus for slitting paper having a plurality of pairs of cutting elements disposed transversely with respect to the direction of movement of the web and a pair of arcuate support boards extending about one row of slitter elements to a point closely adjacent the overlap of the slitter elements to provide an arcuate path of travel for the web as it passes through the cutting area. The arcuate support boards are mounted for rotation about transverse axes to facilitate rotation of the boards away from the cutting elements and thus provide access to such cutting elements for adjustment and maintenance.

    Abstract: A divider assembly for dividing adjacent stacks of sheets during stacking in a stacker mechanism including a tray, mechanism for moving the tray from a sheet receiving position to a sheet discharging position, and a pusher for discharging sheets from the tray in its sheet discharging position. The divider itself is positionable on the tray to separte sheets into separate adjacent stacks, and includes a relatively thin central core, with a plurality of flexible feet secured to the core and having free ends extending below the lower edge of the core. The divider also includes a hinge interconnecting the pair of flexible feet so that the feet with the hinge may be collapsed inwardly when the divider is withdrawn from between the adjacent stacks, thereby permitting easy withdrawal of the divider from between the stacks.
