  • Patent number: 5702537
Abstract: Method for removal of a liquid edge bead from the side marginal edges of a moving web, such as a strip. The method involves providing a moving web and two pair of manifolds, which are positioned above and below the top and bottom surfaces of the web, discharging a gas curtain approximately normal to the plane of the web, and introducing gas to the manifolds to produce a gas curtain from each manifold so that a portion of the gas curtains are deflected towards the edge of the web. The gas curtains that directly impact the web, in combination with a portion of the gas curtain that extends beyond the edge of the web and the portion that is created by the opposing gas curtain, create turbulence at the side marginal edges of the moving web to remove the liquid edge bead and to carry the liquid away from the marginal edges and the moving web.

  • Patent number: 5398372
Abstract: A device and a method are provided for the removal of liquid coolant or lubricant edge beads from the side marginal edges of a moving web, such as metal sheet or strip. The device consists of two or more pairs of manifolds, wherein the individual manifolds of each pair are positioned above and below the main surfaces of the moving web and the manifolds also extend beyond the side edges of the web. The manifolds are arranged at an angle to the side marginal edges of the web and compressed gas is introduced to the manifolds. The introduction of the compressed gas, such as air, through the manifolds provides vertical curtains of compressed gas parts of which impinge on the surfaces of the web and thus create turbulence at the side marginal edge portions where the liquid edge bead is located. Due to the turbulence created at the side marginal edge areas of the moving web effective removal of the liquid edge bead can be accomplished.

  • Patent number: 5363902
Abstract: A method and apparatus for continuously cooling a moving web while simultaneously removing the cooling fluid from the web in which a stream of quenching fluid is applied transversely across the web to cool it and a fluid containment gas is positioned on either side of the quenching fluid to direct a containment fluid toward the quenching fluid and establish a continuous containment fluid curtain stream to prevent passage of the quenching fluid beyond the point of which the containment fluid is introduced.

  • Patent number: 4601112
Abstract: This invention is concerned with an improved apparatus system and method for removing liquid coolant from the side marginal edges of a continuously moving metal strip or sheet after it exits from a rolling mill and subsequent to the prior diversion and collection by a suitable device of the liquid rolling mill coolant that may otherwise contact and deleteriously rewet the top and bottom surfaces of the moving strip as it exits from the mill. The invention in its preferred embodiment involves use of a pair of improved combination strip edge wiping or contacting roller and vacuum creating units that are located adjacent the path of travel and each of the opposing side marginal edges of the moving strip.

  • Patent number: 4477287
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved method and device for removing liquid from a moving surface such as a continuous metal sheet or strip. The invention has particular application to the removing of lubricant and/or coolant from sheet or strip in a rolling operation or the backup rolls of the rolling mills. The invention comprises a vacuum unit to remove most of the liquid from the moving surface, an air knife to drive the liquid remaining on the surface toward the vacuum unit, and a vent maintained at a pressure intermediate between the low pressure of the vacuum unit and the high pressure of the air knife to minimize eddy current formation in the gas flow from the air knife to the vacuum unit. Eddy currents can cause the redeposition of liquid onto the essentially dry sheet or strip.
