Patent number: 8264941Abstract: An arrangement, a method and a system to read information stored in a layer of ferroelectric media. The arrangement includes a layer including a ferroelectric media having one or more ferroelectric domains holding bit charges, a domain corresponding to information; a probe having a tip, wherein the media and the tip are adapted to move relative to one another such that the tip scans the ferroelectric domains of the media while applying a contact force to the domains to generate a direct piezoelectric effect within the domains; and circuitry coupled to the tip and adapted to generate a signal in response to an electrical coupling between the tip and the domains while scanning the tip in contact with the domains, the signal corresponding to a readout signal for ferroelectric bit charges stored in the media.Type: GrantFiled: December 26, 2007Date of Patent: September 11, 2012Assignee: Intel CorporationInventors: Quan Anh Tran, Byong M. Publication number: 20100208573Abstract: An information storage device comprises a media including a ferroelectric layer and a conductive layer and a cantilever adapted to be actuated toward the media. A tip extends from the cantilever and an electrode associated with the cantilever. When the cantilever is actuated, the tip applies a contact force to strain the media so that a charge is coupled from the ferroelectric layer to the tip. A signal is applied to the electrode to generate electrostatic force between the electrode and the conductive layer, causing the cantilever to vibrate based on a frequency of the signal. Vibration of the cantilever causes the contact force applied by the tip to the media to vary. Polarization of the ferroelectric layer can be determined based on one or both of a baseband signal generated by the charge accumulated at the tip and an upper-band signal generated by the variation in phase of the charge accumulated at the tip.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 17, 2009Publication date: August 19, 2010Applicant: NANOCHIP, INC.Inventor: Donald E. Publication number: 20100100991Abstract: A device to detect polarization of a ferroelectric material comprises a probe tip, a charge amplifier electrically connected with the probe tip to convert a charge coupled to the probe tip from the ferroelectric material into an output voltage. The ferroelectric material is oscillated at a reference signal so that a charge is coupled to the probe tip and converted to an output voltage by the charge amplifier. A lock-in amplifier that receives the reference voltage and applies the reference voltage to the output voltage to extract a signal output representing the polarization.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 20, 2008Publication date: April 22, 2010Applicant: NANOCHIP, INC.Inventors: Byong M. Patent number: 7310196Abstract: A disk drive includes a rotatable data storage disk, an interface, a transducer, a write buffer, an actuator, and a controller. The transducer is configured to read and write data on the disk. The interface is configured to receive data with associated write commands and a park signal. The write buffer is configured to temporarily store the data and associated write commands while the data waits to be written on the disk via the transducer. The actuator is configured to move the transducer between a parked position and tracks on a disk where data is read and written. The controller is configured to execute the buffered write commands by positioning the transducer relative to tracks on the disk while writing data from the write buffer to the disk, and is configured to respond to the park signal, which is indicative of an imminent transducer to disk contact condition, by moving the transducer to the park position without completing execution of the buffered write commands.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 2005Date of Patent: December 18, 2007Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Erhard Schreck, Robert Jackson, Timothy Glassburn, Donald E. Patent number: 7280301Abstract: A method and apparatus which can provide a temperature estimate in a hard disk drive or other electronic device is provided. Output from the sensor, which may be indicative of a location spaced from the target temperature location, is sampled and integrated over an interval of time to form an estimate of average input sensor voltage. During the time interval, history of the HDD pre-amplifier operating modes is accumulated. The results are combined to form an estimate of HDA ambient temperature. Sensor offsets associated with each power mode, and weighted to the corresponding mode duty, can be subtracted from the average input sensor voltage.Type: GrantFiled: October 7, 2004Date of Patent: October 9, 2007Assignee: Maxtor CorporationInventors: Robert Jackson, Donald E. Patent number: 7044154Abstract: The invention is a detection and prevention system to detect and prevent fluid leaks in a property that may cause damage to the property. The sources of the leaks may include, for example, toilets, hot water heater, sinks, washing machines, water makers and broken pipes or other sources of fluid leaks. The inventive may include one or more sender units that may be positioned at various locations on a property. The sender units may have a fluid sensor (for detecting a fluid leak) and a transmitter (for communicating with a base unit). The base unit may receive signals from the transmitter when the fluid sensors detect a fluid. The base unit may then communicate with a main shut off valve to restrict the flow of fluids onto the property.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 2003Date of Patent: May 16, 2006Assignee: Process IntegrationInventors: Robert D.
