  • Patent number: 8711008
Abstract: Methods and systems for detecting icing or incipient icing conditions external to a vehicle (100) are disclosed. An apparatus in accordance with one embodiment of the invention includes a temperature sensor (120) configured to direct a first signal corresponding to a temperature of an airstream, and a water content sensor (130) configured to direct a second signal corresponding to a water content of the airstream. A processing unit (140) can receive the first and second signals and, based on at least the first and second signals, provide an indication (150) when at least the first and second signals taken together correspond to an at least incipient icing condition. Accordingly, the system can be installed on aircraft to provide notice to the crew of incipient or existing icing conditions.

Date of Patent: April 29, 2014
    Assignee: The Boeing Company

  • Patent number: 5484109
Abstract: An apparatus for shearing glass refuse such as bottles, containers, windshields, and the like into a glass aggregate. The apparatus comprises a rectangular housing having an inlet chute for loading glass, a Popper for initial breaking of the glass, a Breaker for shearing the glass into smaller pieces, and a Shearer for shearing the glass pieces into a glass aggregate. The glass aggregate is comprised of particles that are small, porous, and consistent enough in size such that it can be used as a filler in many products and also as a substitute for sand.

  • Patent number: 4729369
Abstract: A toe splint and bunion correction device comprising: a substantially L-shaped splint member of a thermoplastic material which maintains rigidity at body temperature; and a velcro fastener for securing the splint member to the foot. The method for preparing and applying the toe splint and bunion correction device comprises the steps of: placing the thermoplastic splint member in a heating medium at a temperature sufficient to allow the splint member to become pliable; removing the splint member from the heating medium; molding the splint member into a configuration accommodating the foot and toe while the splint member is pliable; maintaining the splint member in the configuration accommodating the foot and toe until the temperature of the splint member cools to less than the temperature at which it became rigid; and, fastening the splint member to the foot with a velcro fastener.
