    Abstract: Meta,para-substituted isopropylidene bisphenols are provided and methods for making such materials. Phenol, or substituted phenol is condensed with a meta-substituted isopropenyl phenol or a meta-hydroxy-.alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzyl alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The resulting meta,para-substituted isopropylidene bisphenols can be used as stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride resins and as intermediates for making high performance thermoplastics having chemically combined meta,para-isopropylidene diphenoxy units.
