  • Patent number: 4324114
Abstract: An improved seal (10) for use in a universal joint (11) having an elastic seal ring (23) compressed between a pair of right circularly cylindrical sleeves (24,25). The seal ring is bonded to the sleeves. The sleeves are adapted to have press-fitted relationship with association portions of the universal joint, such as the journal trunnion (12) and the bearing retainer (14). In one form, the elongated extent of the sleeves is parallel to the axis (15) of the journal trunnion (12) and in a modified form, the sleeves (124,125) extend perpendicularly thereto. In each form, a portion of one of the sleeves is disposed adjacent the inner end of the needle bearings (22,122) so as to limit axial movement thereof. The sleeves are bonded to the seal ring so as to preclude sliding movement therebetween while yet permitting limited axial play in the universal joint thereby to provide long troublefree life of the seal.

  • Patent number: 4173129
Abstract: An improved seal for use in a universal joint structure. The seal includes a C-shaped seal ring which is loaded into sealing engagement with an associated bearing cap by a load ring compressively nested within the C-shaped seal ring. The leg of the seal ring sealingly engages the bearing cap under a controlled load to provide an improved oil seal. The arrangement of the seal is coordinated with the allowable play of the trunions of the joint structure so as to assure positive sealing engagement of the seal ring as a result of the loading of the load ring over the entire range of play movement permitted in the joint structure. The trunions may be journaled in the bearing caps by suitable roller bearings which may effectively further limit the play so as to limit sliding movement as well as axial deflection of the seal rings for further improved sealing in the joint structure.

  • Patent number: 4077634
Abstract: A seal arrangement is provided having a pair of elastomeric seal rings with a seal band adjacent the innermost diameter of the rings. The seal rings are retained by means of a pair of elastomeric torics, one of which is relatively immovable and the other of which is relatively movable. The movable toric is positioned between supporting structure incorporating ramps of low angle, which improves the pressure, velocity relationships of the seal and permits operation at higher speeds. Retention of the other toric stabilizes the seal and prevents cocking or tilting of the rings so as to maintain the sealing plane perpendicular to the rotational axis. An arrangement is thus provided wherein the seals are of nearly equal surface area which produces pressure balanced seals and a more constant, level force along the axis.

  • Patent number: 3940938
Abstract: A master brake cylinder comprises a spring biased piston reciprocally mounted in a bore defined in a housing thereof. A cup seal, disposed in the bore to abut the piston, comprises a flexible annular flange portion having a plurality of circumferentially disposed grooves formed thereon to induce rotation of the cup seal upon the return stroke of the piston, subsequent to a braking operation. The cup seal is composed of a cured elastomeric material having a cup-shaped reinforcing fabric encapsulated therein.
