  • Patent number: 4243503
Abstract: Disclosed is an electrode for use in electrochemical processes wherein a metal substrate made of a valve metal such as titanium carries an electrocatalytically active coating such as an oxide selected from the group consisting of manganese, iron, cobalt, or nickel applied in a series of layers wherein particles of fibers of various filler materials such as titanium, other valve metals, tin oxide, titanium oxides, manganese oxide, quartz, silica, and alumina were admixed with the top coating material.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 29, 1978
Date of Patent: January 6, 1981
    Assignee: Diamond Shamrock Corporation
Inventors: Donald F. Lieb, Mary R. Suchanski
  • Patent number: 4185142
Abstract: Disclosed are methods for rejuvenation of oxygen electrodes which maximize the power efficiency available from such oxygen electrodes while minimizing the voltage necessary to operate such oxygen electrodes over extended periods of time. These methods include in situ and out of cell techniques using hot water washing followed by air drying and dilute acid washing followed by air drying.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 9, 1978
Date of Patent: January 22, 1980
    Assignee: Diamond Shamrock Corporation
Inventors: Frank Solomon, Donald F. Lieb, Ronald L. LaBarre
  • Patent number: 4124471
Abstract: A novel method of controlling electrodialytically produced silica sol particle size and concentration comprising effecting electrodialysis of an alkali metal silicate anolyte in an electrodialysis cell with a cation permselective membrane separating the anolyte and the catholyte while adding alkali metal silicate solution to the anolyte to maintain the desired pH whereby a silica sol with increasing particle size is formed and when the silica sol has reached the desired particle size, continuing electrodialysis with addition of an alkali metal hydroxide solution to control the pH until the silica sol has the desired concentration.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 22, 1977
Date of Patent: November 7, 1978
    Assignee: Diamond Shamrock Corporation
Inventors: Donald F. Lieb, Thomas T. Sugano
  • Patent number: 4083067
Abstract: A recirculating toilet having a bowl and a storage chamber, and recirculating means for recirculating liquid from the storage chamber through the bowl and back into the storage chamber. Filter means is interposed between the storage chamber and the recirculating means for filtering solid particles from liquid flowing from the storage chamber toward the recirculating means. A treatment chamber is interposed between the filter means and the recirculating means, and the treatment chamber has a volume substantially smaller than the storage chamber. Treatment means is provided for destroying bacteria in liquid contained in the treatment chamber (flush water).
