    Abstract: The invention is a device for controlling the temperature and thus the viscosity of the lubricating fluid in a rear axle or differential. A first embodiment of the device comprehends a curved bi-metal strip or plate disposed proximate the ring gear and closely conforming to it. The strip extends about the periphery of the ring gear in the direction of rotation of the gear when the vehicle is moving forward. As the temperature of the lubricating fluid increases or decreases, the bi-metal strip or plate moves to direct a larger or smaller flow of the lubricating fluid toward the housing through which heat is transferred to the atmosphere. In another embodiment, a bi-metal baffle disposed adjacent the ring gear includes a plurality of flaps which open upon a rise in lubricating fluid temperature and direct more fluid to the housing to assist heat dissipation.

    Abstract: A controllable hydrodynamic torque converter is provided for use within a vehicle having a detectable throttle level, the torque converter comprising a first stator having a first outlet angle and a second stator having a higher second outlet angle. The second stator is selectively engageable with the first stator using a hydraulic clutch to thereby vary the torque converter K-factor during idle and high-throttle conditions, and is permitted to freewheel during low or part throttle conditions. The first outlet angle is at least five degrees lower than the second outlet angle. A vehicle is also provided including an engine having an engine torque and a detectable throttle level, a transmission, a torque converter operable to transmit the engine torque to the transmission and having a stator assembly with two stators, a selectively controllable clutch, and a controller configured to selectively actuate the clutch to vary the K-factor depending on the throttle level.

    Abstract: A torque converter assembly is provided, which includes an impeller, a turbine, and a stator. The impeller and the turbine each have a plurality of passages for directing fluid. The inlet and outlet of each passage are larger in cross-sectional area than the middle portion of the passage, located between the inlet and outlet. This structure reduces energy losses, which typically occur near the midpoint of the passage due to flow separation. Additionally, reducing the flow area of the torus of the impeller and turbine permits an overall thinner torque converter, which is preferred for engine packaging purposes. The stator includes a core, a shell, and a plurality of stator blades. One end of each stator blade is fixed to the core, while the opposite end is fixed to the shell. Each stator blade has a mean camber line and an associated mean camber line length. The maximum thickness of each stator blade is approximately 20% of the mean camber line length.

The inner rim portion has an outer race of a one-way torque transmitting device integrally molded therewith. The outer race includes a plurality of cam surfaces and spring abutment surfaces for the one-way device which cooperate with roller, springs and an inner race which are later assembled therewith to complete the one-way torque transmitting device.
