  • Patent number: 4840289
Abstract: The all plastic can includes an upwardly extending open mouth portion with an inwardly tapering exterior surface and a molded plastic end closure member having an integrally formed rim portion extending downwardly therefrom. An outwardly tapering interior surface is provided on the rim and is inclined to mate with the inwardly tapering exterior surface of the open mouth portion of the can body. Relative rotation is imparted between the end closure member and the product filled can body so that spin-bond sealing connects the inwardly tapering exterior surface of the open mouth portion and the interior surface of the rim portion of the end closure member. An intergrally formed outwardly extending rib is provided on the inwardly tapering exterior surface of the open mouth portion to enhance the spin-bond between the end closure member and the can body.

  • Patent number: 4303190
Abstract: An improved composite container is disclosed in which a composite end closure member having a horizontal generally disk-shaped central portion and an annular flange portion is bonded to one end of a tubular cylindrical composite body member, preferably by the use of radio frequency or dielectric energy. Preferably, the body member end portion is reversely inwardly curled to define an upwardly extending curled portion the free extremity of which is contiguous with the end member, thereby to structurally reinforce the container and to more securely hold the end member in place.

  • Patent number: 4289265
Abstract: This invention relates to a composite container for liquids, such as oil, including a generally tubular vertically arranged fibrous body wall, a flexible impervious membrane-type closure member closing the bottom end of the body wall, and an outer support cap for supporting in protective relation the membrane closure member. The end closure member includes an annular peripheral flange portion that is arranged concentrically within, and is bonded to the inner surface of, the fibrous body wall, which flange portion extends longitudinally upwardly of the container from a central disk portion that extends transversely across the body wall adjacent the lower end thereof. The support cap includes a central disk portion that extends in supporting relation beneath the central portion of the membrane closure member, and a peripheral flange portion that extends concentrically about, and is bonded to the external surface of, the fibrous body wall.

  • Patent number: 4016311
Abstract: A protected easy-open metal end for containers is disclosed that contains a scoreline which defines on the central portion of the end a removable panel portion and a residual lip portion. A layer of synthetic resin hot melt material is deposited on one of the central panel surfaces opposite the scoreline, whereupon after the hot melt is solidified, the end is post heated to effect softening of the hot melt so that the metal end surface is wetted thereby. The resultant bond between the hot melt and the metal end is so great that severing of the removable panel from the end effects corresponding severing of the hot melt layer to provide protective hot melt layers on the edges of each of the panel and the residual lip portions. The hot melt layer may be applied to the same or the opposite central panel surface that contains the scoreline, or on both surfaces to provide two-side protection.

  • Patent number: 3933298
Abstract: An improved end seam construction for composite containers used in the packaging of hard to hold materials, such as materials under vacuum or pressure. The composite tubular body wall member includes at least one fibrous layer to the inner wall surface of which is bonded by a thermoplastic adhesive a metal liner layer that projects axially at at least one end a given distance beyond the fibrous layer. The end of the fibrous layer is deformed radially outwardly to define a funnel-shaped flange about which the projecting metal liner layer is deformed and compressed. The length of the projecting metal liner layer is such that when the metal-lined flange portion is connected by a rolled seam with the flange, the metal liner layer is compressed into surface-to-surface engagement with at least one surface of the curl portion of the metal end.
