Abstract: Software installation for hardware devices is disclosed. Software for a device to be connected to a computer is installed on the computer. While the software is being installed, an automatic installation mode for the device may be suppressed. This mode is suppressed after being automatically initiated by the operating system of the computer upon the device being connected to the computer before the software is completely installed. Furthermore, once the software has been installed, the user may be instructed to connect the device to the computer, after which the automatic installation mode for the device may be initiated without rebooting the computer.

Abstract: A system for altering function of a printing device is provided. The system includes a printing device having a cartridge slot configured to receive any of a plurality of different cartridge types, and a computing device including a processor, wherein the processor is linked to the printing device and is configured to control operation of the printing device. The system further includes first instructions loadable on the computing device. The first instructions are specific for a first cartridge type and control operation of a first cartridge of the first cartridge type when the first cartridge is disposed in the cartridge slot of the printing device.

Abstract: A method for use in printing a print job from an application program on a printer. The printer has associated job settings which include a private portion containing a printer-specific job setting. The method includes providing a program interface configured to enable the application program to access the printer-specific job setting. The method also typically includes, from the application program, sending a command to the program interface to perform an operation related to the printer-specific job setting, and performing the operation related to the printer-specific job setting.

Abstract: The present invention includes as one embodiment a method of providing a complementary user-friendly search system with a document including parsing the document for keywords that are to be included in an index of words in the document, associating each keyword with at least one synonym, the synonym being at lease one common word used by users that relates to the keyword and incorporating the keyword and the at least one synonym in the search system.

Abstract: A method of displaying a requested document is described. The method may include pre-formatting the document with special tags that correspond to information to be imported from one of plural files, each file containing information in a predefined language, identifying one of the predefined languages that the document is to be displayed, replacing the special tags with corresponding information from one of the files that is associated with the identified language and displaying the document with the information representing the identified language.

Abstract: A peripheral device and method of processing digital images stored on a removable memory device that minimizes the downtime of the image acquisition device which generated the digital images. The device and method provide for copying the digital images from the memory device to the peripheral device before processing the digital images any further, thus freeing up the memory device for storing additional digital images.
