Patent number: 8832207Abstract: A communication system comprises an access point and one or more client stations associated with the access point. The access point maintains a simple network management protocol (SNMP) table including a respective media access control (MAC) address for each of one or more client stations associated with the access point. In accordance with some embodiments, the access point receives a SNMP request message including a MAC address of the client station for which the association is to be identified. The access point then identifies the association of the client station by searching the SNMP table for the MAC address of the client station for which the association is to be identified. Further, the access point sends a reply message identifying the association of the client station with the access point when the SNMP table includes the MAC address of the client station.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 2010Date of Patent: September 9, 2014Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventor: Donald L. Patent number: 8804680Abstract: Systems and methods of efficiently providing network access for a portable electronic device while moderating power consumption are described. The electronic device may have a cellular radio and a network radio for communicating with an alternative network. In a default state, the electronic device may carry out communications using the cellular radio, and the network radio may be in an off state. Periodically, the electronic device may determine if the electronic device has moved. If so, a location of the electronic device may be determined and a check may be carried out to determine if the electronic device is in range of an available alternative network. If the electronic device is in range of an available alternative network, the network radio may be turned on and an attempt to connect to the alternative network may be made.Type: GrantFiled: February 7, 2011Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: Spectrum Bridge, Inc.Inventors: Jeffrey C. Schmidt, Donald L. Joslyn, Manish Shukla, Hrishikesh Gossain, Mario A. Camchong

Patent number: 8175079Abstract: A device and method enable reestablishing a wireless connection in a wireless network. A first wireless device detects that a previous wireless connection has been lost with a second wireless device that employs dynamic frequency selection (DFS). The first wireless device then uses a routing table to identify a third wireless device as a next hop of a route to the second wireless device, and transmits a request message to the third wireless device, where the request message requests identification of a current DFS channel over which the second wireless device is operating. Next, the first wireless device receives a response message from the third wireless device, where the response message identifies the current DFS channel over which the second wireless device is operating. Using the current DFS channel, the first wireless device establishes a new wireless connection with the second wireless device.Type: GrantFiled: March 27, 2009Date of Patent: May 8, 2012Assignee: Motorola Solutions, Inc.Inventors: Pertti O. Publication number: 20120110643Abstract: Network access for a secure network is transparently provided to a wireless device using a social networking type of framework. An operator of a secure wireless network may register the network and access credentials for the network with a network access management system. The operator also may configure network access settings, such as designating a sharing level, that permits wireless devices meeting access criteria for the sharing level to use the network. Electronic devices belonging to social media contacts, such as family members and friends, may be associated with the registered network. When the associated devices or other qualifying devices are within communication range of the network, a client function in the device may coordinate with the network access management system to provide network access to the devices. The coordination may take place through a network different than the secure network, such as a cellular network to which the electronic device has subscription access.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 1, 2010Publication date: May 3, 2012Inventors: Jeffrey C. Schmidt, Peter Stanforth, Donald L. Joslyn, Manish Shukla, Mario A. Camchong, Sekhar V. Uppalapati, Hrishikesh Gossain

Publication number: 20100246554Abstract: A device and method enable reestablishing a wireless connection in a wireless network. The method includes detecting at a first wireless device that a previous wireless connection has been lost with a second wireless device that employs dynamic frequency selection (DFS) (step 505). A third wireless device is then identified from a routing table of the first wireless device as a next hop of a route to the second wireless device, and a request message is transmitted from the first wireless device to the third wireless device, where the request message requests identification of a current DFS channel over which the second wireless device is operating (step 510). Next, a response message is received at the first wireless device from the third wireless device, where the response message identifies the current DFS channel over which the second wireless device is operating (step 515).Type: ApplicationFiled: March 27, 2009Publication date: September 30, 2010Applicant: MOTOROLA, INC.Inventors: Pertti O. Patent number: 7796570Abstract: A system and method for performing continuous accounting on a mobile node within a wireless ad-hoc network, using a sparse matrix method for compaction of the accounting data when forwarding data to a core network. The system and method perform continuous accounting of network traffic on a mobile node, and collected data is periodically transmitted in summary report form to a core network when accessible. During periods when the core network is inaccessible, collected data is maintained for subsequent transmission to the core network once access is re-established.Type: GrantFiled: July 12, 2002Date of Patent: September 14, 2010Assignee: Meshnetworks, Inc.Inventors: Kevin L. System and method for managing communication links between nodes in a wireless communication network
Patent number: 7483413Abstract: A system and method for management of communication links between nodes in a wireless communication network (100). The system and method perform the operations of estimating an expected rate of change in the characteristics pertaining to communication over a communication link in the network (100), and assigning a value associated with the link based on the expected rate of change. The system and method also adjust the rate of change of the value associated with the link based on the condition of the link.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 2005Date of Patent: January 27, 2009Assignee: MeshNetworks, Inc.Inventors: Guenael Strutt, Jeffrey C. Patent number: 7215638Abstract: A system and method to provide emergency call access in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems without compromising network security. The system and method enables VoIP emergency signal detection at a user device, and transmission of the VoIP emergency signal from the user node to a network server node through the use of data encapsulation and decapsulation (or “tunneling”), allowing VoIP data routing via an IP transport layer regardless of access or network security restrictions.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 2002Date of Patent: May 8, 2007Assignee: MeshNetworks, Inc.Inventors: Robin U.
