  • Patent number: 4762249
Abstract: A thermoplastic end (110), particularly a bottom, for a container which has upstanding paperboard sidewalls (112) and which is inertially spinwelded onto the paperboard sidewall for bonding. The end portion (110) has an annular groove (148) for snugly receiving the sidewall (112) and a wall configuration (136, 138, 140, 142 and 144) which minimizes the forces exerted on the bond which would tend to dislodge the end portion. The wall configuration is generally in the form of an inverted U-shape with a portion of an upstanding wall of the U forming a side of the annular groove. The end portion has strengthening ribs (122) positioned generally within the region of U-shape and additional radial ribs imparting strength and rigidity to the container end. The paperboard sidewall may be internally lined with a layer of thermoplastic material or may be unlined.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 5, 1982
Date of Patent: August 9, 1988
    Assignee: Packaging Resources Incorporated
    Inventors: Vincent Fortuna, Donald MacLaughlin
  • Patent number: 4571281
Abstract: Disclosed is an integral braking device for braking a live tool or spindle in a spinwelding machine. The device comprises a cam-activated, spring-loaded brake adapted to bear against a wear resistant braking surface. The brake is both adjustable and self-adjusting and will not interfere with the free rotation of the spindles when not actuated by the cam.

  • Patent number: 4470868
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for the bonding together of two similarly shaped articles of similar thermoplastic material utilizing oscillatory motion between the two articles to generate frictional heat therein sufficient to form an hermetic seal therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4468265
Abstract: Disclosed is a method and apparatus for determining the quality of a spinweld bond produced on a single or multiple spindle production spinwelder and to a method and apparatus for alarming and/or ejecting products containing defective welds. The method and apparatus of the present invention utilizes a detector means to determine the condition of a tool or spindle (i.e., if it is still "live" rotating at a point when it should be at rest) and a timing means to actuate an indicator when a live tool is detected. The present invention also involves a means to detect a spinwelder with an actuated indicator and to eject the product thereon. The present invention also relates to a method and apparatus for automatically shutting down a spinwelder producing an excess of defective products.
