    Abstract: An encapsulated particle includes a core particle and a polyurethane layer. The polyurethane layer is disposed about the core particle and includes the reaction product of an isocyanate and a polyol component. The polyurethane layer is formed in the presence of a silicone surfactant. The polyol component includes a first polyol having a nominal functionality of at least 2.5 and a hydroxyl number of from 20 to 300 mg KOH/g. A method of encapsulating the core particle includes the steps of providing the core particle, the silicone surfactant, the isocyanate, and the polyol component. The method also includes the steps of mixing the isocyanate and the polyol component and encapsulating the core particle with the polyurethane layer.

    Abstract: A resin composition includes a compound having at least two reactive hydrogen atoms and a polyurethane encapsulated particle including a core particle and a polyurethane layer disposed about the core particle. The resin composition may be used in an article and in a method of making the article. The article includes the reaction product of the resin composition and an isocyanate that are reacted in the presence of the polyurethane encapsulated particle. The method of making the article includes providing the core particle in a vessel. The method also includes introducing and combining a polyol component and an isocyanate component to encapsulate the core particle. The method further includes introducing and combining the resin composition and the isocyanate, in the presence of the polyurethane encapsulated particle, to form the article.

The polyurethane layer includes the reaction product of an aromatic isocyanate component and a polyol that is reactive with the aromatic isocyanate component. The aromatic isocyanate component includes methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, toluene diisocyanate, and mixtures thereof. The polyol that is reactive with the aromatic isocyanate component is derived from an aromatic amine-based initiator and includes a toluene diamine.

    Abstract: A lignocellulosic composite material and a method for preparing the lignocellulosic composite material are disclosed. The composite material is formed from lignocellulosic particles and a binder resin. The binder resin comprises a polyisocyanate, at least one of insecticide and/or fungicide that are dispersed throughout the polyisocyanate. The insecticide and/or fungicide is also dispersed throughout the lignocellulosic particles. Since the insecticide and/or fungicide is dispersed throughout the composite material, the composite material is insect resistant and is able to withstand insect attacks and prevent fungus growth and decay.

    Abstract: The subject invention provides a building material useable as a compressed solid or as a foamable product in building projects. The building material is formed from an isocyanate and an aggregate originally having a contaminant present therein. The aggregate has been processed such that the amount of the contaminant is below a predetermined level within the aggregate. The contaminants that may be present in the aggregate include inorganic contaminants, volatile organic contaminants, and synthetic organic contaminants. The aggregate may be obtained from reclaimed soil, reclaimed sediment, reclaimed sludge, reclaimed fill material, and reclaimed mine trailings.
