Patent number: 6920153Abstract: A technique for enabling a shared storage provider (SSP) to provide shared data storage to a plurality of customers while providing greater privacy and security of each customer's data by implementing a virtual private (VP) addressing scheme is disclosed. The technique also allows a storage networking service carrier to provide connectivity between a plurality of customer storage networking sites, keeping each customer separate from each other. In one embodiment, the technique is realized by network architecture and a scheme to separate and virtualize storage traffic and stored data on a shared infrastructure.Type: GrantFiled: April 2, 2001Date of Patent: July 19, 2005Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Donald R. Ellis, Don Cawthorne, Silvo J. Frank, Sylvain Demargerie, Chris Murton, Silvana Romagnino, R. Bruce Wallace

Patent number: 6859865Abstract: A system and method for removing distance related latency effects in acknowledged data transfer applications. The system comprises providing highly reliable redundant communication links between a primary storage site and a remote storage site. The system receives data from a storage consumer and transcribes the data to a storage device at the primary storage site. Copies of the data are placed on each of the redundant communication links for transmission to the remote storage site, and a data transfer acknowledgement is immediately generated for the storage consumer. The copies of data are reconciled at the remote storage site and the data is transcribed to a storage device. A transaction report is issued and transmitted to the primary storage site. In the rare event that there are any errors in the reconciled data at the remote storage site, the transaction report includes an error message, and subsequent error recovery procedures are undertaken.Type: GrantFiled: November 9, 2001Date of Patent: February 22, 2005Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Sylvain De Margerie, Bruno Lepine, Donald R. Ellis

Patent number: 6222848Abstract: A method and apparatus for routing data packets via a synchronous optical (SONET) network from devices connected to a local area network to devices connected to other local area networks. At each transport node in the SONET network the data packets are unloaded from SONET payloads and requeued for transmission on an output path. This allows for easy resolution of contention between devices transmitting at the same time and avoids pre-assigning SONET channels. Source and destination address information from the data packets can be used to route the data packets through the SONET network. A time-to-live indicator can be used to find the shortest path to a destination address in a SONET ring network or any bidirectional ring network.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 1997Date of Patent: April 24, 2001Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Kenneth G. Patent number: 5365510Abstract: A communications system is provided having SONET communications channels extending between first and second locations. The channels include pairs of forward and reverse channels for carrying traffic in normal operation between first and second locations and a protection channel for carrying traffic of one channel in the event of a fault. Each pair of forward and reverse channels is provided on a shelf at each location, the shelves having the same relative position at both locations and the protection channel is provided on a protection shelf. The protection channel includes, between the first and second locations, a forward optical link and a reverse optical link and at each of the first and second locations, a single protection loop, coupling the forward and reverse optical links, that forms the protection channel.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 1992Date of Patent: November 15, 1994Assignee: Northern Telecom LimitedInventors: David J.
