    Abstract: A liquid contaminated with a carbonyl compound, especially an aldehyde, is purified by being contacted with a bed of solid polyvinyl alcohol particles or fibers. The carbonyl compound is adsorbed or chemisorbed onto the solid polyvinyl alcohol surface with resulting reaction in the carbonyl content of the liquid.
