  • Patent number: 6162017
Abstract: A stand alone blood pump which can be used with different types of oxygenators or extra corporeal circuits during surgery. After use the pump is easily detachable from its drive motor to enable a new blood pump to be mounted for the next operation. The pump impeller includes vanes at the base which extend at an angle to the plane of rotation and smoothly merge along a common plane with a plurality of helical fingers respectively. The width of the helical fingers gradually diminishes from the vanes to their extremities which are angularly spaced from each other at the pump inlet. The helical fingers flow the blood helically about the impeller axis to the vanes which then centrifugally flow the blood to the pump outlet tangentially of the pump housing.

  • Patent number: 5770149
Abstract: An extracorporeal blood oxygenation system comprising an integrated blood pump/heat exchanger/membrane oxygenator assembly which is mountable upon, and engageable with, a separate motor/drive assembly. The blood pump of the system incorporates a novel axial/centrifugal impeller assembly. An optional blood reservoir may be incorporated into the system to receive and contain venous return and/or surgical site blood. Also, an optional arterial filter may be incorporated into the system for filtering the oxygenated blood before the blood is returned to the patient. The pump/heat exchanger/membrane oxygenator component is preferably constructed such that heat exchange fluid which is being infused into the heat exchanger will pass through and/or in contact with a portion of the membrane oxygenator so as to further maintain the temperature of blood as it passes through the membrane oxygenator.

  • Patent number: 5501574
Abstract: A dynamic blood pump includes a rotating core member and rotating ring portion effective to pre-spin blood before the blood enteres helical pumping channels of the pump. The blood is pumped and further rotated as it moves axially along the helical channels toward a centrifugal section of the pump. At the centrifugal pumping section circumferential velocity differentials are also controlled to diminish damage to the blood. Outwardly of the centrifugal pumping section, a forced-vortex pumping section communicates the pumped blood to an exit port.

  • Patent number: 5266265
Abstract: A blood oxygenator/heat exchanger system includes disposable and durable components, the latter being possible of permanent installation to further reduce costs, inconvenience and risks of use. The system may selectively include a blood pump of axial, centrifugal, or ventricular type, along with an integral venous reservoir. By combination, arrangement and cooperation of structural features blood pumping volume is decreased, advantageous blood flow paths are achieved, blood damage is reduced, and durable components are reusable for lowest costs. The oxygenator/heat exchanger nests upon a durable heat source base to be supported thereby, while redundant boundaries are provided between blood and heat transfer media.

  • Patent number: 5217689
Abstract: A blood oxygenation system includes an oxygenator for oxygenating blood and a heat exchanger for regulating blood temperature. The heat exchanger includes a heat exchange coil that provides a flow path for a heat exchange media, the heat exchange coil is configured to define a heat exchange zone, and the oxygenator is disposed in heat transfer relationship with the heat exchange zone in order to transfer heat between the heat exchange coil and the oxygenator. The heat exchange coil may at least partially circumscribe the oxygenator and, preferably, be helically shaped and disposed coaxially over a membrane oxygenator. In one embodiment, single or multiple hollow fiber strands are wound onto a small diameter center core so that the fiber segments provide spiralling helical blood-flow pathways which increase oxygen/carbon dioxide exchange by secondary flow paths.

  • Patent number: 5186713
Abstract: A method, device and system for providing a flow of oxygenated perfusion fluid (e.g. oxygenated whole blood) through a balloon angioplasty catheter to perfuse tissues which would normally be deprived of blood flow when the balloon of the angioplasty catheter is inflated. In accordance with the invention, an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation device is fluidly connected to the angioplasty catheter such that oxygenated fluid (e.g. oxygenated whole blood) may be passed through the catheter and caused to exit the catheter distal to the angioplasty balloon. The patient's own blood may be withdrawn, oxygenated by the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation device and subsequently reinfused through the angioplasty catheter. A dual-lumen introducer sheath may be employed for the dual function of a) facilitating insertion of the catheter and b) allowing withdrawal of blood for subsequent oxygenation and reinfusion through the angioplasty catheter.
