  • Publication number: 20190062172
Abstract: It is provided process of extracting ammonia gas from a source containing magnesium ammonium phosphate (MAP) particles such as wastewater comprising the steps of isolating MAP particles from the wastewater, heating the MAP particles to a temperature of 50-120° C. in an atmosphere with a relative humidity between 50-120%, decomposing the MAP and producing a solid comprising magnesium hydrogen phosphate and ammonia gas; and collecting the ammonia gas. The MAP particles are MgNH4PO4.6H2O or struvite.

  • Patent number: 8444861
Abstract: A method and apparatus for treating slurries of organic solids is disclosed. A slurry of organic solids is admixed with hydrogen peroxide, followed by exposure to microwave irradiation resulting in the heating of the mixture and enhanced hydrolysis of the organic solids. The treated slurry of organic solids can then be further treated in a variety of downstream processes, including solid separation, digestion and fermentation. The supernatant portion of the treated slurry of organic solids can be a source from which to recover compounds such as nutrients (for example nitrogen, phosphate, potassium, magnesium, calcium) or industrial organic compounds (such as acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid), or as a source of readily biodegradable organic compounds for supplementing a biological wastewater treatment process, digester or fermenter.

Date of Patent: May 21, 2013

  • Patent number: 7922897
Abstract: A fluidized bed reactor for removing phosphorus and nitrogen from wastewater has a column comprising a number of sections. The diameter of the column changes stepwise between the sections. A flow velocity in excess of 100 cm/min is maintained in a lowermost one of the sections and lower flow velocities are maintained in subsequent sections. A struvite supersaturation ratio is controlled in part by recycling wastewater from an outlet of the column. Struvite pellets are removed periodically from the bottom of the column.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: April 12, 2011
Assignee: The University of British Columbia
