  • Patent number: 10156287
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus to convert bidirectional rotary motion to unidirectional rotary motion having better mechanical advantage than a simple crank. It can make pedaling a bicycle easier or give an engine better mechanical advantage. It can also convert unidirectional rotary motion to bidirectional rotary motion, or continuous rotary motion to rotary motion with a momentary dwell. Each of these applications have input and output shafts on a common axis.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 2, 2013
Date of Patent: December 18, 2018
    Inventor: Donald Shaffer

  • Publication number: 20150211611
Abstract: The invention is a crank-less motion converter to convert bidirectional rotary motion from a pendulum type engine to unidirectional rotary motion having good mechanical advantage throughout the power strokes. It uses two hypocycloid or Cardan style planetary gear sets. Gear-less versions can also be designed using linear bearings rather than tooth mesh to cause the motion. It can also convert unidirectional rotary motion to bidirectional rotary motion, or continuous rotary motion to rotary motion with a momentary dwell.
