  • Patent number: 5452946
Abstract: This invention provides a hill-holder control system for operating vehicle brakes of a nature readily retrofit on existing vehicles. This system solves the problem of stopping and starting motion as when a traffic signal is encountered upon an upwardly inclined roadway while preventing backward motion of the vehicle. This problem is even more particularly evident in vehicles having a clutch where a foot must be removed from the brake to the accelerator and the clutch disengaged in a critical rhythmic sequence. Provisions are made so that backwards motion under control of the driver is possible in an automated embodiment of the invention by way of a manual override braking switch. In order to actuate the braking, a sensor is conditionally responsive solely to rearward movement of said vehicle is provided for latching a braking solenoid into braking position for release, for example, the braking is not actuated under the conditions that the accelerator lever is depressed or that reverse gear is engaged.

  • Patent number: 5384699
Abstract: A system including a method and apparatus for preventive maintenance of PET scanner photomultiplier detector blocks is disclosed. The quantitive comparisons used in the method of the present invention to provide an indication in the form of a display or printout advising the user that the photomultiplier block is stable, intermittently unstable, or drifting unstable, and also advising of the expected date of failure of a photomultiplier block in the PET scanner. The system alerts the user to replace the defective photomultiplier block prior to catastrophic failure in a scheduled preventative maintenance program, thus eliminating expensive and unscheduled downtime of the PET scanner due to photomultiplier failure. The apparatus for carrying out the method of the present invention preferably resides in the host computer controlling a PET scanner.

  • Patent number: 4648430
Abstract: A method and apparatus of collecting a desired end-point weight amount of material first conveys the material into the collection container until a predetermined weight amount is collected. The predetermined weight amount is less than the desired end-point weight amount by a selected initial weight offset amount. An additional incremental amount of material is next conveyed into the container for a predetermined fixed time period. In doing so, the method and apparatus gauge the particular flow characteristics of the associated flow system. A further additional incremental amount of material is conveyed into the collection container for another time period, the length of which reflects the anticipated flow characteristics of the system, based upon the performance of the system during the preceding period. The method and apparatus repeat this sequence until the then-existing weight amount equals or exceeds the desired end-point weight amount.
