  • Publication number: 20100124684
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for heating a metallic interconnect for a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) to 150˜300° C., which can minimize the thermal shock by reducing a temperature difference between the metallic interconnect and a coating material during a thermal plasma coating process on the metallic interconnect for the SOFC. Accordingly, through the disclosed method, a densified coating layer with minimized micro pores/cracks can be formed on the surface of the metallic interconnect. Thus, it is possible to reduce the loss in output performance during the operation of the SOFC at a high temperature, and to maintain the long-term durability and performance of the metallic interconnect.

  • Patent number: 6436565
Abstract: A method of making and fuel electrode-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). For manufacturing the SOFC, YSZ powder containing 30 to 50 vol % of Ni is mixed with carbon powder to give a fuel electrolyte slurry which is pre-sintered, coated on a fuel electrode tube, and then the coated tube is sintered. An air electrode slurry made of (La, Sr)MnO3 powder is coated on the electrolyte-coated tube and sintered. The fuel electrode of the metal (Ni/ceramic (YSZ) cermet of the SOFC is a support and the electrolyte layer underlaying the air electrode is coated as a thin film. At about 1,000° C., the Ni components of the fuel electrode are connected to each other like a mesh, improving the fuel electrode strength while the porous fuel electrode allows the sufficient permeation of fuel gas, thereby providing a large economical profit in the production cost without degradation of fuel cell performance.

  • Patent number: 6180276
Abstract: A method for fabricating an electrode and membrane assembly (MEA) for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. The MEA comprises a polymer electrolyte membrane on each side of which an electrocatalyst layer is provided in a melted state. A perfluorosulfonyl fluoride copolymer powder ranging, in particle size distribution, from 20 to 200 &mgr;m is hot-pressed at 200-250° C. to give a pre-formed sheet whose opposite sides are then coated with a catalyst ink consisting of Pt/C powder, glycerol and water. This catalyst ink-coated preformed sheet is again subjected to hot pressing at 200-250° C. to embed the catalyst ink into the pre-formed sheet. Hydrolysis in NaOH/methanol or H2SO4 solution converts the membrane of the sheet from a non-ionized form to an ionized form.
