  • Patent number: 5098958
Abstract: Vinyl ether copolymers and a method of preparing the same. The vinyl ether is copolymerized with styrene, alkyl-substituted styrenes, alkoxy-substituted styrenes and mixtures thereof. In the process, a cadmium halide is used with hydrogen iodide or a suitable iodine containing electrophile, as the coinitiator.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 26, 1991
Date of Patent: March 24, 1992
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: Donn DuBois
  • Patent number: 5073610
Abstract: A process to polymerize alkoxystyrenes utilizing a zeolite as the initiator is provided. Polymers of p-methoxystyrene having number average molecular weights in excess of 1.times.10.sup.6 are prepared by room temperature polymerization. The invention also provides a high molecular weight polymer of alkoxystyrenes which has a broad molecular weight distribution.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 28, 1990
Date of Patent: December 17, 1991
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: Donn A. DuBois
  • Patent number: 5068294
Abstract: A method of preparing styrene derivative polymers is provided. The process utilizes as a catalyst an iodine containing electrophile and a zeolite. The styrene derivatives cationically polymerize to polymers without the need for heavy metal initiators. The styrene derivatives may be copolymerized with vinyl ethers to form random or block copolymers. Preferred styrene derivatives include styrene and methoxystyrenes.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 28, 1990
Date of Patent: November 26, 1991
    Assignee: Shell Oil Company
    Inventor: Donn A. DuBois
  • Patent number: 5055536
Abstract: A method of preparing vinyl ether polymers is provided. The process utilizes as a catalyst an iodine containing electrophile and a zeolite. The vinyl ethers cationically polymerize to polymers having narrow molecular weight distributions. The vinyl ether may be copolymerized with styrene, alkyl-substituted styrenes, alkoxy-substituted styrenes and mixtures thereof.
    Type: Grant

  • Patent number: 4889900
Abstract: A process is disclosed for treatment of alkyl methacrylate monomers for subsequent polymerization by an anionic initiator to produce a polymer with a molecular weight distribution between about 1.20 and about 1.01. The process involves treatment of the monomer with an aluminum hydrocarbyl or boron hydrocarbyl in quantities which permit polymerization in the presence of the by-products of the reaction between the impurities and the aluminum hydrocarbyl or boron hydrocarbyl.
