Abstract: A coated abrasive product having a backing bearing abrasive grains on one major surface thereof and a pressure-sensitive adhesive, coatable from water, on the other major surface thereof. The pressure-sensitive adhesive can be used to secure the coated abrasive to a support pad or back-up pad. The support pad provides the coated abrasive with the necessary foundation during abrading operations. The pressure-sensitive adhesives of this invention can adequately secure the coated abrasive to the support pad even at high rotation speeds and at high grinding pressures. Previously known pressure-sensitive adhesives for coated abrasives that are coatable from water were unable to provide this property.

Abstract: Coated abrasive articles containing particles having specified shapes. The coated abrasive article comprises:a. a backing;b. at least one binder;c. an abrasive coating comprising shaped abrasive particles and diluent particles said at least one binder serving to bond the abrasive coating to the backing. The diluent particles can comprise (1) a plurality of individual abrasive particles bonded together by an adhesive to form an agglomerate, (2) a plurality of individual non-abrasive particles bonded together by an adhesive to form an agglomerate, (3) a plurality of individual abrasive particles and a plurality of individual non-abrasive particles bonded together by an adhesive to form an agglomerate, (4) individual non-abrasive particles, (5) individual abrasive particles, or (6) combinations of the foregoing.

The coated abrasive product comprises a backing, a make coat, and a size coat, and may contain an optional saturant coat, an optional presize coat, an optional backsize coat, or any combination of said optional coats, in which at least one coat is formed from a composition curable by electromagnetic radiation comprising:(A) a curable portion containing both ethylenically unsaturated groups and 1,2-epoxide groups, which groups can be in the same compound or in different compounds, and(B) a photoinitiator portion.The photoinitiator portion activates both free-radical and cationic curing mechanisms.
