  • Patent number: 7685620
Abstract: The present invention is an apparatus and method for allowing a user to search for specific content across many television channels in order to locate desirable television shows related to the searched content. Multiplexed cable signals flow thorough a logical unit which buffers text associated with the voice stream of each station via the pre-encoded closed-captioning signal or through the real-time voice translation within the logical unit. The user then enters search terms through one of a variety of different input devices. Upon entry of the search terms, the logical unit will compare the entered term with those available keywords stored in each buffer. Lexical parsing associates terms which may differ from plural to singular forms, or in tense. Additionally, synonym comparisons may be made. The logical unit will return a list of matches for the search criteria and allows the user the option of going directly to the television program.

  • Publication number: 20070055572
Abstract: A method for managing stock so that a merchant who provides both on-line and in-person shopping may dependably advise an on-line shopper regarding availability of an item. An approximate quantity available of the item is determined, and then adjusted according to an estimate of the quantity of the item held before checkout by in-person shoppers. When the result is less than a threshold, corrective action is invoked. The corrective action may be prompting the on-line shopper to select an alternative item, asking the on-line shopper to submit an order immediately, monitoring the approximate quantity during the on-line shopping session and informing the on-line shopper if the approximate quantity falls below a second threshold, and instructing an in-house shopping assistant to reserve the item for the on-line shopper.

  • Publication number: 20070037534
Abstract: A user's media preferences can be obtained and stored for later use in setting up a currently-available media device. The media device inputs are programmed based on the media device's capabilities and the available media sources for the particular geographic area in which the user is currently located. Media device inputs may be set by the media device itself or by a computer attached to the media device, either directly or via a network. Device data, including information such as the number of media device inputs to be programmed, and whether or not the media device inputs can be toggled between several stations, is obtained. Station data, including available media sources, is obtained for the current geographic area. A user profile, including information such as input preference settings and genre preferences, is also obtained. The media device inputs are then programmed based on the user profile, the station data for the geographic area, and the media device capabilities.

  • Publication number: 20040010798
Abstract: A guardian review system is disclosed which monitors the television programming that a child watches and to report back to the parent. The hardware consists of a logical unit which is used to monitor the television programming. The software is divided into two programs: the monitor program and the report program. The monitor program analyzes the closed captioning signal, the audio signal, the title, and content ratings of the television programming to determine if the television programming contains any of the offensive items specified by the parent. The monitor program creates data of the offensive language viewed by the child and sends the data to the report program. The reporting program receives criteria from the parent such as time, channel, duration, rating, and content of a television program. The report program can operate either on the television or on an external computing device, such as the parent's personal computer.
