Patent number: 7002322Abstract: A modulated power supply comprises first and second coding units. The second coding unit is responsive to a feed-forward error signal representing the error between the coded output of the first coding unit and an input modulating signal. The second coding unit codes for the more limited range of the error signal, thereby improving resolution. The first coding unit can comprise M coding units arranged in parallel with one another. The M coding units are operated in a manner which increases the apparent number of quantisation levels. This is achieved by feeding a modified version of the input modulating signal to each of the M coding units or by offsetting by quantisation grids of the M coding units. The improvements are particularly useful for improving performance where the input modulating signal has a wide bandwidth.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2003Date of Patent: February 21, 2006Assignee: Nortel Networks LimitedInventors: Dorian Davies, Graham Dolman

Publication number: 20050068793Abstract: A pulse width modulated (PWM) power supply has a plurality of phases. Each phase comprises a power switching device for generating an output signal. A controller receives a modulating input signal and generates a set of control signals, each control signal controlling the operation of the switching device in a respective one of the phases. Each control signal comprises a sequence of time windows, with a pulse of variable width positioned within each time window. Control signals for some of the phases are aligned to different parts of their respective time windows compared to the control signals for other phases. This has been found to improve linearity when operating at extremes of normal operating range.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 30, 2003Publication date: March 31, 2005Inventors: Dorian Davies, Graham Dolman, Philip Holder
