  • Patent number: 4818440
Abstract: Novel surfactant compounds are provided of the formula R--CO--NH--(C.sub.2 H.sub.4 O).sub.n --CH.sub.2 COOH, wherein R--CO-- is the residue of at least one aliphatic carboxylic acid of 6-22 carbon atoms and n represents a number having an average of 2-10, as well as their salts with alkali metals, ammonium and amines. These compounds possess not only a low primary toxicity, but also a low secondary toxicity for the skin, and accordingly they are especially useful in cosmetic compositions, compositions for non-automatic dishwashing and laundering compositions for the fine laundry.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 16, 1983
Date of Patent: April 4, 1989
    Assignee: Stamicarbon B.V.
Inventors: Werner Schafer, Rolf Schafer, Doris Schafer, Johan G. Aalbers, Jacob K. Smid
  • Patent number: 4808239
Abstract: Nontoxic, aqueous, contact lens cleaning compositions containing a weakly anionic surfactant, and optionally also a chelating agent, urea and/or a source of hydrated protons, and methods of chemically removing protein, lipid and calcium deposits from contact lens utilizing these compositions are described.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 22, 1987
Date of Patent: February 28, 1989
    Assignee: Alcon Laboratories, Inc.
    Inventors: Doris Schafer, Rolf Schafer
  • Patent number: 4617186
Abstract: A sustained release drug delivery system suitable for ophthalmic use is described. The delivery system utilizes a cationic polymer (polyquat) to deliver a drug residue. The drug residue delivered may comprise an anionic drug or a drug-carrier complex.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 28, 1984
Date of Patent: October 14, 1986
    Assignee: Alcon Laboratories, Inc.
    Inventors: Doris Schafer, Rolf Schafer
  • Patent number: 4599195
Abstract: A nontoxic, aqueous, contact lens cleaning solution containing a mixture which includes a nonionic or weakly anionic surfactant, a chelating agent, a source of hydrated protons, and optionally also urea; and a method of chemically removing protein, lipid and calcium deposits from contact lens utilizing this solution are described.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 28, 1984
Date of Patent: July 8, 1986
    Assignee: Alcon Laboratories, Inc.
    Inventors: Doris Schafer, Rolf Schafer
  • Patent number: 4546123
Abstract: The improved polymeric hydrogel suitable for use in forming soft contact lenses is described. The hydrogel is improved by means of its resistance to the formation of calcium, lipid and protein deposits thereon. This resistance is achieved by means of covalent modification of the hydrogel with a surfactant.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 28, 1984
Date of Patent: October 8, 1985
    Assignee: Alcon Laboratories, Inc.
    Inventors: Doris Schafer, Rolf Schafer
  • Patent number: 4362737
Abstract: Amphoteric dissociating complexes which have a cationic group having the structure ##STR1## wherein: R.sub.1 is an aliphatic alkyl group having 6 to 22 carbons,R.sub.2 is a member of the group consisting of --R.sub.4 --(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2)--COOH, --R.sub.4 --(CH.dbd.CH)COOH and --OPO.sub.3 H.sub.2, wherein R.sub.4 is --NH--, --NH--CO--, or --O--CO--, andR.sub.3 is hydrogen, --CH.sub.2 --COOH or --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --COOH; and an anionic group which is either a carboxylate having the formula.sup.- OOC--CH.sub.2 --(O--CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2).sub.x --OC.sub.n H.sub.2n+1or a phosphate having the formula.sup.= O.sub.3 PO--CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --(OCH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2).sub.x --OC.sub.n H.sub.2n+1wherein:n is 8 to 22 and x is 1 to 10; and z is 1 when the anionic radical is a carboxylate and z is 2 when the anionic radical is a phosphate are disclosed. The compositions are effective carriers for active pharmaceutical or cosmetic ingredients.
