  • Publication number: 20080108367
Abstract: Systems and methods for supporting multiple wireless communication technologies within a cell are provided. A base station can transmit a second wireless communication technology in a smaller coverage than the coverage of the first wireless communication technology, thereby producing an underlay-overlay cell radiation pattern. Whether a mobile station communicates with the base station using the first or second wireless communication technology can be based on a comparison of signal quality measures for the mobile station, or any other performance metric with a fixed or dynamic threshold.

  • Publication number: 20070248043
Abstract: A method, computer-readable medium, and apparatus for dynamically assigning radio resources between a frequency division duplexing (FDD) carrier and a time division duplexing (TDD) carrier is provided. The method includes monitoring radio frequency conditions and traffic load of the FDD and TDD carriers; allocating a resource assignment for a downlink on the FDD carrier or the TDD carrier, based upon the radio frequency conditions or the traffic load of the FDD and TDD carriers; and allocating a resource assignment for an uplink on the FDD carrier or the TDD carrier, based upon the radio frequency conditions or the traffic load of the FDD and TDD carriers.

  • Publication number: 20070230414
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and computer-readable medium for performing asymmetric frequency division duplexing (FDD) are provided. The method includes allocating a first bandwidth for an uplink portion of an FDD data transmission; and allocating a second bandwidth for a downlink portion of the FDD data transmission; wherein the first bandwidth and the second bandwidth have different sizes.

  • Publication number: 20070025291
Abstract: Systems and methods for enhancing the capacity of base stations are provided. A base station can operate in a time division duplex mode within a first frequency band. When a second frequency band is acquired for the base station's geographic region, a duplexer can be added to the base station. The base station can then operate in a frequency division duplex mode, where the first frequency band is used for base station downlink transmissions and the second frequency band is used for uplink transmissions.

  • Publication number: 20070025290
Abstract: Systems and methods for communicating between a wireless station and a base station are provided. A base station can allocate both a TDD channel and an FDD channel pair for communicating with a wireless station. The base station can transmit and receive unicast messages using the time slots of the TDD channel or can transmit multicast messages over all time slots of the TDD channel.

  • Publication number: 20060205422
Abstract: A frequency reuse scheme that provides high spectral efficiency and reduced interference in areas where cell sites overlap is provided. Three frequencies are allocated per cell site, with each sector employing two frequencies, one frequency being transmitted at a higher power and the second frequency being transmitted at a lower power. The higher power frequency in one sector differs from the higher power frequency employed in the other two sectors, and the lower power frequency used in one sector differs from the lower power frequency used in the other two sectors.

  • Publication number: 20060111104
Abstract: Methods and systems for priority access to control channels are provided. A mobile stations is assigned a user priority value. The mobile station selects a retry algorithm from a plurality of retry algorithms based on the assigned user priority value. Alternatively, the assigned user priority value can be used as a seed value for a single retry algorithm. Mobile stations with higher priority values will attempt to access the control channel within shorter time periods and more frequently than those with lower priority values.

  • Publication number: 20060079304
Abstract: Systems and methods for a manually adjustable directional antenna are disclosed. The device includes a housing and the housing includes a wireless modem, a directional antenna and an adjustment mechanism. The adjustment mechanism is coupled to the directional antenna via a mounting pipe. Alternatively, the housing includes a directional antenna, an adjustment mechanism, and a connector, which couples the directional antenna to an external modem. The adjustment mechanism may be an adjustment knob for the directional antenna within the housing or a rotatable turntable used to support and rotate the entire housing, including the directional antenna.

  • Publication number: 20060052123
Abstract: A system and method for frequency planning is provided. In systems with consecutive frequency channels, half-channel frequency reuse can be provided between channels employed by different cells. Specifically, two channels in two proximately located cells can overlap within the frequency spectrum by one-half of the frequency of a channel. Half-channel overlap can increase frequency reuse, and in turn, system capacity.

  • Publication number: 20060052059
Abstract: Systems and methods for an automatically adjustable directional antenna are provided. A broadband wireless device includes an RF transparent housing. The housing includes a directional antenna and a wireless modem coupled to the directional antenna. The wireless modem incorporates a mechanical antenna adjuster which automatically adjusts the direction of the directional antenna based on signal strength and quality. Alternatively, the modem is external to the broadband wireless device and provides feedback to the mechanical antenna adjustor for automatically adjusting the directional antenna based on signal strength and quality.
