  • Patent number: 4449503
Abstract: A fuel injection pump (100) including a plunger (2) and a piston (1) movably disposed in a pumping chamber (17), means for initiating (3, 5) fuel injection and means for terminating (13, 20, 29) fuel injection, the plunger periodically pressurizing fuel in a pressure chamber (44) and the piston (1) spaced from the plunger and allowing a metering chamber (16) to fill with a metered quantity of fuel to be injected to an engine. The means for initiating injection comprises a pilot valve (5) having a solenoid to selectively operate between either of two states and a control valve (3) movable between first and second positions in response to the state of pilot valve (5), the first position filling the metering chamber (16) with the metered quantity of fuel. The pilot valve (5) determines the fuel quantity to be delivered to the engine relative to a signal from an electronic controller. An accumulator (4) is pressurized during each cycle of the plunger (2) to provide pressurized fuel during a metering phase.

Abstract: A fuel injection pump (100) including a plunger (2) and a piston (1) movably disposed in a pumping chamber (17), means for initiating (3, 5) fuel injection and means for terminating (13, 30, 29) fuel injection, the plunger periodically pressurizing fuel in a pressure chamber (44) and the piston (1) spaced from the plunger and allowing a metering chamber (16) to fill with a metered quantity of fuel to be injected to an engine. The means for initiating injection comprise a pilot valve (5) having a solenoid to selectively operate between either of two states and a spool valve (3) movable between first and second positions in response to the state of pilot valve (5), the first position filling the metering chamber with the metered quantity of fuel. The pilot valve (5) determines the fuel quantity to be delivered to the engine relative to a signal from an electronic controller. An accumulator (4) is pressurized during each cycle of the plunger to provide pressurized fuel during a metering phase.

  • Patent number: 4343280
Abstract: A valving arrangement is disclosed for varying the quantity and timing of fuel injections of a jerk pump (10) associated with an internal combustion engine. The arrangement consists of a bypass valve (40) in communication with the injection chamber (22) of the jerk pump (10) which produces a controlled bypass of fuel rather than being delivered through the injector delivery valve (42) to the engine cylinders. The bypass valve (40) in turn is controlled by a solenoid-operated three-way pilot valve (88) which causes pressurizing or venting of an operating chamber (84) adjacent a bypass valve operator piston (80). The three-way pilot valve (88) in turn is controlled by the fuel system electronic controls (98) to control the timing and volume of fuel charge delivered by the jerk pump (10) in each injection cycle.

  • Patent number: 4219154
Abstract: A fuel injection system (10) for injecting fuel into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine includes a multi-way valve (30), a solenoid (42) for controlling the operation of the valve, a shuttle valve (38) that is moved within a shuttle chamber (37) in response to the change of state of the solenoid, and an intensifier piston (62) having an upper cylinder (62) movable within actuating chamber (49) and a lower cylinder (66) movable within metering chamber 50. The position of the shuttle valve, in turn, regulates the admission of pressurized fuel from a high pressure pump (152) into the actuating chamber (49) to drive the intensifier piston in a first direction. The lower cylinder 66 of the piston 62 is movable within the metering chamber (50) to amplify the pressure of the fuel to a level several times greater than supply pressure prior to introducing same into a fuel injector (78) for discharge into the combustion chamber.
