Patent number: 7924415Abstract: The present invention provides a light direction sensor for determining the direction of a light source. The system includes an image sensor; a spacer attached to the image sensor, and a pattern mask attached to said spacer. The pattern mask has a slit pattern that as light passes through the slit pattern it casts a diffraction pattern onto the image sensor. The method operates by receiving a beam of light onto a patterned mask, wherein the patterned mask as a plurality of a slit segments. Then, diffusing the beam of light onto an image sensor and determining the direction of the light source.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 2009Date of Patent: April 12, 2011Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Douglas B. Patent number: 7060968Abstract: The present invention presents an optical encoder with increased conversion rates. Improvement in the conversion rate is a result of combining changes in the pattern recognition encoder's scale pattern with an image sensor readout technique which takes full advantage of those changes, and lends itself to operation by modern, high-speed, ultra-compact microprocessors and digital signal processors (DSP) or field programmable gate array (FPGA) logic elements which can process encoder scale images at the highest speeds. Through these improvements, all three components of conversion time (reciprocal conversion rate)—namely exposure time, image readout time, and image processing time—are minimized.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2003Date of Patent: June 13, 2006Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Douglas B. Patent number: 6765195Abstract: This invention presents a two-dimensional absolute optical encoder and a method for determining position of an object in accordance with information from the encoder. The encoder of the present invention comprises a scale having a pattern being predetermined to indicate an absolute location on the scale, means for illuminating the scale, means for forming an image of the pattern; and detector means for outputting signals derived from the portion of the image of the pattern which lies within a field of view of the detector means, the field of view defining an image reference coordinate system, and analyzing means, receiving the signals from the detector means, for determining the absolute location of the object. There are two types of scale patterns presented in this invention: grid type and starfield type.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2002Date of Patent: July 20, 2004Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Douglas B. Patent number: 5965879Abstract: An absolute optical linear or rotary encoder which encodes the motion of an object (3) with increased resolution and encoding range and decreased sensitivity to damage to the scale includes a scale (5), which moves with the object and is illuminated by a light source (11). The scale carries a pattern (9) which is imaged by a microscope optical system (13) on a CCD array (17) in a camera head (15). The pattern includes both fiducial markings (31) which are identical for each period of the pattern and code areas (33) which include binary codings of numbers identifying the individual periods of the pattern. The image of the pattern formed on the CCD array is analyzed by an image processor (23) to locate the fiducial marking, decode the information encoded in the code area, and thereby determine the position of the object.Type: GrantFiled: May 7, 1997Date of Patent: October 12, 1999Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Douglas B. Patent number: 5483058Abstract: A device for position encoding of a rotating shaft in which a polygonal mirror having a number of facets is mounted to the shaft and a monochromatic light beam is directed towards the facets. The facets of the polygonal mirror direct the light beam to a stand-alone low line density diffraction grating to diffract the monochromatic light beam into a number of diffracted light beams such that a number of light spots are created on a linear array detector. An analog-to-digital converter is connected to the linear array detector for reading the position of the spots on the linear array detector means. A microprocessor with memory is connected to the analog-to-digital converter to hold and manipulate the data provided by the analog-to-digital converter on the position of the spots and to compute the position of the shaft based upon the data from the analog-to-digital converter.Type: GrantFiled: October 18, 1993Date of Patent: January 9, 1996Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator, National Aeronautics & Space AdministrationInventor: Douglas B. Patent number: 5329121Abstract: A device for positioning encoding of a rotating shaft in which a polygonal mirror having a number of facets is mounted to the shaft and a light beam is directed towards the facets. The facets of the polygonal mirror reflect the light beam such that a light spot is created on a linear array detector. An analog-to-digital converter is connected to the linear array detector for reading the position of the spot on the spots on the linear array detector. A microprocessor with memory is connected to the analog-to-digital converter to hold and manipulate the data provided by the analog-to-digital converter on the position of the spot and to compute the position of the shaft based upon the data from the analog-to-digital converter.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1993Date of Patent: July 12, 1994Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space AdministrationInventor: Douglas B. Patent number: 5058281Abstract: The grooved surface of an aberration-corrected holographic model grating is sensed by utilizing the sensing head of a scanning tunneling microscope. The sensing head is mechanically connected to a blazing type stylus for replicating the groove pattern of the holographic model on a ruled grating blank. A ruling engine causes the sensing head not only to scan the surface of the holographic grating model but also drive a blazing type ruling stylus or an equivalent type device in accordance with an error signal resulting from a departure of a sensing tip from the top of the holographic model groove as a function of tunneling current.Type: GrantFiled: August 23, 1990Date of Patent: October 22, 1991Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Administrator of the National Aeronautics & Space AdministrationInventor: Douglas B.
