Patent number: 6523898Abstract: A chair includes a base having a control, and a seat and a back tilt bracket pivoted to the control for synchronous movement. An extension is adjustably supported on the back tilt bracket and is pivotally connected to a back support structure and a backrest frame in a four-bar linkage arrangement. The extension is adjustable to change the angular position of the back when in the rest position, and further provides a back tilt axis that is located rearward of a rear edge of the seat, which provides a unique back movement upon recline that is more rearward and less downward than most synchrotilt chairs. The back support structure includes a spine assembly pivoted to a rear end of the extension and extends upwardly. Armrests are operably supported on the spine assembly for vertical adjustment by an armrest mount, and a handle on the armrests is operably connected to a latch on the armrest mount for easy adjustment of the armrests.Type: GrantFiled: May 25, 2000Date of Patent: February 25, 2003Assignee: Steelcase Development CorporationInventors: Douglas C. Patent number: 5492476Abstract: A fold out display is particularly adapted to support a wide variety of different types of group work activities, team projects, and the like, and includes a free standing base which fixedly supports a primary panel having an exterior display surface. At least one foldable panel is hingedly supported on the primary panel for movement between a closed folded position overlying the primary panel, and an open unfolded position protruding outwardly coplanar with the primary panel. The foldable panel includes at least an interior display surface which overlies the display surface of the primary panel when in the closed folded position. A one-piece living hinge has opposite side portions connected with the side edges of the primary and foldable panels, and is shaped such that when the foldable panel is shifted into the open unfolded position, the two display surfaces are juxtaposed in a substantially contiguous relationship to collectively provide an enlarged generally continuous and uninterrupted display.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1994Date of Patent: February 20, 1996Assignee: Steelcase Inc.Inventors: Douglas C. Ball, Lon D. Scheerhorn

Patent number: 5438937Abstract: A mobile table system is provided in which multiple tables can be juxtaposed in many different configurations to facilitate a wide variety of both group and individual activities. Each table has a top with oppositely oriented side edges shaped to abut flush with the side edges of like tables, an outer marginal edge configured to accommodate a user thereby, and an inner marginal edge with a generally concave shape which defines a central space when aligned with the inner marginal edges of like tables. Each table includes legs to support the same freestanding on a floor surface. A first one of the legs depends from the top adjacent the outer marginal edge thereof and has a foot at the lower end thereof, and a second one of the leg depends from the top adjacent the inner marginal edge thereof and has a roller at the lower end thereof, so as to permit manual translation of the tables across the floor surface in a wheelbarrow fashion.Type: GrantFiled: June 8, 1993Date of Patent: August 8, 1995Assignee: Steelcase Inc.Inventors: Douglas C. Ball, Lon D. Scheerhorn

Patent number: 5155955Abstract: An office space dividing system comprising office furniture components in combination with a plurality of structural rectangular frames having openings which may be left open or closed in varying degrees with a wide variety of fill options, which may be readily changed, to create the desired degree of privacy. The system combines the advantages of a full height office partition system with lockable doors, and an open plan panel system. An enlarged cornice accommodates both wiring and ambient lighting, with a cornice to ceiling space being left open or closed with a clerestory, as desired, without compromising the ability to install lighting fixtures and wiring. The rectangular frames have mitered stiles which, when assembled with other frames, and/or mitered fill pieces, create columns defining vertical wire ways which communicate with cornice wiring, work surface height wiring, and/or base wiring, as desired.Type: GrantFiled: May 2, 1990Date of Patent: October 20, 1992Assignee: Westinghouse Electric Corp.Inventors: Douglas C. Patent number: 4974808Abstract: A corner mounting unit for a computer and like equipment quickly attaches to two adjoining surfaces at the same height. The mounting unit includes a frame having a slightly elevated plate with attachments positioned at selected locations whereby computer components or accessories may be positioned and firmly supported directly or indirectly at any of such variety of locations. A keyboard or bridging surface is captured by the frame and extends forwardly of the unit at a lower elevation and bridging the included angle between the adjoining surfaces. A separate adjustable keyboard may be employed. Also adjustable monitor turntables or swing arm attachments may be secured to the unit to position the computer components or accessories at the desired location for effective use. The unit eliminates the need for an expensive and complex intermediate or third top and the requisite hardware.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1984Date of Patent: December 4, 1990Assignee: Haworth Sub, Inc.Inventor: Douglas C. Patent number: 4831791Abstract: A space divider system utilizes horizontally extending beams mounted on height adjustable legs. The system includes main beams on which are two enclosed wire raceways at substantially work surface height. Also included are stabilizer beams which may be attached at their inner ends to any point along the main beam between the legs. The outer ends of the stabilizer beams are connected to a relatively short transverse beam which includes height adjustable posts or legs at each end. The outer end of the stabilizer beam may optionally be connected to the center of the transverse beam or to either leg or to a leg alone to form a T, I or L-shape configuration. The stabilizer beam and transverse beam have the same configuration and may support work surfaces or other components. Work surface such as table tops may also be supported from the legs at the ends of the transverse beams.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1984Date of Patent: May 23, 1989Assignee: Hauserman, Inc.Inventor: Douglas C.
