    Abstract: A disk drive includes a rotatable storage disk, a suspension, and a slider assembly. The slider assembly includes a slider body, a read/write head that magnetically interacts with the storage disk, and a slider mover. The slider body is secured to the suspension in a fashion that allows the slider body to roll. The slider mover selectively rolls the slider body in a controlled fashion. With this design, the slider mover selectively rolls the slider body to control a head-to-disk spacing of the read/write head. Further, the slider body can have a roll axis and the read/write head and the slider mover can be positioned on opposite sides of the roll axis.

    Abstract: A disk drive includes a rotatable storage disk, a suspension, and a slider assembly. The slider assembly includes a slider body, a first slider deformer and a second slider deformer. Activation of the first slider deformer deforms the slider body, and activation of the second slider deformer deforms the slider body. Further, the slider deformers can be independently controllable. The read element is positioned near the first slider deformer and the write element is positioned near the second slider deformer. Activation of the first slider deformer adjusts a read head-to-disk spacing of the read element and activation of the second slider deformer adjusts a write head-to-disk spacing of the write element. Further, activation of the first slider deformer does not significantly influence the write head-to-disk spacing and activation of the second slider deformer does not significantly influence the read head-to-disk spacing.

    Abstract: A disk drive includes a rotatable storage disk, an actuator motor, a slider that magnetically interacts with the storage disk, and a drive circuitry. A portion of the slider moves between a first position wherein the slider does not contact the storage disk and a second position wherein the slider contacts the storage disk. The drive circuitry can detect when the position of the slider changes between these positions. In one embodiment, the drive circuitry monitors off-track movement of the slider to detect when the slider has moved between these positions. The drive circuitry can also current that is directed to the actuator motor that is used to compensate for off-track movement to detect when the slider moves between these positions. In yet another embodiment, the drive circuitry monitors a rotational velocity of the storage disk to detect approximately when the slider moves between these positions.

A actual measured distance along a first axis between the suspension mounting side and the disk mounting surface is measured. The spacer is positioned between the disk mounting surface and the storage disk. The spacer has a spacer height along the first axis that is based upon the actual measured distance.

    Abstract: A stationary vacuum deposition machine for use in a method for processing substrates to make magnetic hard disks includes a series of stations and a transport. The series of stations includes an entrance station for receiving substrates into the machine and a predetermined station. The transport operates in a cycle with each cycle including a transport phase and a stationary phase. The transport causes all the substrates that are in the machine to be moved during the transport phase, and be temporarily held stationary during the stationary phase, such that during each stationary phase a predetermined one of the stations is occupied by one of the substrates while each of a plurality of others of the stations is occupied by a respective one of a plurality of others of the substrates. The machine further includes a plurality of vacuum deposition stations and a scanning beam generator.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for automatically adjusting the gram load and static attitude in a head suspension assembly comprising one or more lasers, a fiber optic switch, a measurement apparatus and a computer control means. The fiber optic switch includes a plurality of fiber optic lines which direct the output of the laser to well-defined regions on the suspensions in a disk drive. Irradiation of the suspension by the laser causes a load change which alters the static attitude change in the slider. In the method of the present invention, the initial gram load or static attitude is measured by the measurement apparatus and the control means calculates how much energy is required to cause the change needed to achieve the desired condition. Other information, such as the type of laser to be used is also specified by the control means.

    Abstract: Controlled laser texturing of a magnetic recording disk is accomplished by use of a textured test band on the disk and an analyzing laser system to provide feedback to the texturing laser. The analyzing laser system determines, from diffracted laser light, the average height of the laser-induced bumps formed in the test band by the texturing laser. The analyzing laser beam is directed to the substrate surface and overlaps a group of individual bumps formed in a repetitive pattern. A scanning linear photodector array receives light diffracted from the surface. The digitized output of the array is the angular distribution of diffracted light intensities and is used to compute the average height of the bumps in the test band. The disk is then translated radially so that the texturing laser is aligned with the region of the disk where the textured landing zone is to be placed.

    Abstract: A method is provided for making a high definition, high aspect ratio amorphous carbon element, such as a slider, which carries one or more magnetic heads in a disk drive. A special gaseous environment is provided during laser etching which results in virtually no redeposition of the etched material. The result is a carbon element which has good edge definition for establishing desirable flying characteristics of a slider. In a preferred embodiment the laser etching, which is preferably implemented by an excimer laser, is performed in an gaseous environment of oxygen saturated with water vapor at a pressure above ambient. Significant improvements were also realized with nitrogen saturated with water vapor at a pressure above ambient and steam at ambient pressure. High aspect ratios were achieved, namely slope angles of 50.degree. to 60.degree..
