  • Patent number: 6237847
Abstract: A system is for detecting the passage of multiple sheets along a feed path. The system includes a sensing station (12) through which the feed path passes and which has a light emitter (48) and an optical sensor (50) arranged to sense light transmitted from the light emitter through an item comprising a single or multiple sheet present at the sensing station. The optical sensor (50) provides a voltage output whose magnitude is dependent on the intensity of the transmitted light received by the optical sensor. This output is applied to the first input (58) of a log ratio amplifier (60). A voltage representative of the output of the optical sensor when no item is present at the sensing station (10) is applied to the second input of the amplifier (64). The output of the amplifier (60) is applied to data processing means (52) which then determines whether a single or multiple item is present at the sensing station.

  • Patent number: 6073837
Abstract: An automated teller machine includes a measuring degree (38) to measure the cross-sectional area in the direction of the travel of a bundle of currency notes as it travels to the currency dispense slot (18), and also as it travels from the dispense slot to the purge bin (30) on retraction after a pre-determined time interval. Comparison of the two values indicates whether one or more notes have been removed by a user before the bundle is retracted.

  • Patent number: 5915681
Abstract: Sheet handling apparatus, and more particularly a cash dispenser unit, has a number of cassettes (1,2) which hold currency notes. Pick mechanisms (3,4) are associated with each cassette and function to transfer notes from the cassettes to conveyor belts for passage to an outlet point. There are two successive conveyor belt systems. The first belt is driven by an induction motor (7) which also provides power for the pick mechanisms. The second belt system (9,19) is driven by a stepper motor (12). The stepper motor is required to operate under two different control regimes. In one it is synchronized to the speed of the induction motor (7) and for this purpose the induction motor (7) has an optical timing disc 27 mounted on its shaft (21) which cooperates with an optical sensor (28) to generate a pulse train to drive the stepper motor (12) through a selector (25) and driver circuit (23). For the other control regime a pulse generator (26) supplies pulses through the selector (25) to the stepper motor (12).

  • Patent number: 5853089
Abstract: An apparatus for detecting the passage of superposed sheets, e.g. deposited currency notes, along a feed path includes a mechanism which has a pair of cooperating rollers (42,44) and which is arranged to generate an output voltage whose magnitude varies in response to the passage of an item (single or multiple sheet) between the rollers (42,44). Samples of this output voltage are taken during one complete revolution of one of the rollers (42,44). These samples are processed to generate a value representative of the cross-sectional area of said item. In order to take account of sheets of different sizes, a further value is generated representative of the dimension of said item parallel to its direction of feed. The value representing said cross-sectional area is divided by this further value in order to derive a value which represents the average thickness of said item and which enables a determination to be made as to whether said item is a single or multiple sheet.

  • Patent number: 5384468
Abstract: Apparatus for indicating the thickness of a document being fed along a feed path comprises cooperating upper and lower roll sets (20 and 32) between which a document passes. The lower roll set (20) is driven by the document transport, while the upper roll set (32) is rotatably mounted on a pivotally mounted arm (36), which is urged by a spring (42) to cause the upper roll set (32) to move toward engagement with the lower roll set (20). The upper roll set (32) includes a central cylindrical portion (30) of reduced diameter. A further roll (46) is mounted so that its circumference is normally spaced from the surface of the cylindrical portion by a predetermined distance. A timing disc (52) is mounted for rotation with the further roll (46), and a sensing device (58) is associated with the timing disc (52) to generate pulses as the further roll (46) rotates.

  • Patent number: 5055670
Abstract: A document sensing apparatus includes a phototransistor (12) for generating a first or second voltage depending on whether or not, respectively, a document is present at a sensing location, and a capacitor (36) for providing a second voltage whose peak value is determined by said second value. A voltage comparator (30, 38, 40) compares said first and second voltages and provides an output signal indicative of the presence of a document at the sensing location if said first voltage is less than a predetermined fraction of said second voltage. A microprocessor (44) controls the operation of a circuit (71-1) which provides, as necessary, a charging current to said capacitor (36) so that, while a document is present at the sensing location, said second voltage is prevented from falling by a significant amount, thereby preventing problems occurring if a document remains at the sensing location for a prolonged period due to a feeding irregularity.

  • Patent number: 4982947
Abstract: A linear variable differential transformer (42) produces an output voltage which varies linearly with movement of the axis of a movable axis roller (14) relative to the axis of a fixed axis roller (12) brought about by the passage of a sheet between the rollers. Circuits (154, 189) store a reference voltage representative of a minimum value of the output voltage during one revolution of the fixed axis roller, and subtracting circuits (162, 172) subtract the reference voltage from the output voltage when a single or multiple sheet is passing between the rollers so as to produce a difference value representative of the thickness of this sheet. A processor (178) samples the difference value a plurality of times during one revolution of the fixed axis roller, and provides an indication that a multiple sheet has passed between the rollers if at least a predetermined number of consecutive samples of the difference value exceed a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 4894783
Abstract: A multiple sheet detection apparatus includes first and second cooperating rollers (12, 14), the second roller (14) being movable away from the first roller (12) in response to the passage of a single or multiple sheet between the rollers (12, 14). Voltage generating means (42) produce an output voltage which varies linearly with movement of the axis of the second roller relative to the axis of the first roller (12). Data processing means sample this voltage a predetermined number of times over one complete revolution of the first roller (12), first with no sheet present and then with a single or multiple sheet passing between the rollers (12, 14), to produce first and second values which are respectively representative of the sums of the voltages sampled during each such revolution. The first value is subtracted from the second value to produce a third value on the basis of which the number of sheets corresponding to the second value is determined.

The first value is subtracted from the second value to produce a third value on the basis of which the number of sheets corresponding to the second value is determined.
