  • Patent number: 6519651
Abstract: A system in which a personal computer sends messages into a TCP/IP network using a conventional dial-up link and downloads data from the TCP/IP network using a high-speed one-way satellite link. A preferred embodiment uses a conventional SLIP provider to connect to the TCP/IP network and uses a commercial software TCP/IP package that has a standard driver interface. A spoofing protocol compensates for the long propagation delays inherent to satellite communication.

  • Patent number: 6473793
Abstract: A hybrid gateway includes functionality that allows bandwidth on a network (such as a satellite link) to be dynamically allocated and enforced. The hybrid gateway compares the thresholds defined for a requesting terminal's level of service and its measured running average data throughput to determine if the requesting terminal's bandwidth should be reduced (throttled). The hybrid gateway intercepts requests made by the requesting terminals and, if necessary, reduces the advertized window size of requests made by the requesting terminal, thereby reducing the transmission speed of the link and therefore the bandwidth of the link.

  • Publication number: 20020129245
Abstract: An apparatus for providing a secure processing environment is disclosed. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a read/write memory for storing encrypted information. It also includes a processor, a cipherer and an authenticator. The cipherer is in communication with the read/write memory for receiving encrypted information therefrom and is configured to decrypt the encrypted information into decrypted information to be returned to the memory for subsequent use by the processor. The authenticator authenticates the decrypted information prior to use by the processor and re-authenticates the information prior to re-encryption by the cipherer.

  • Patent number: 6438666
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling access to confidential data are disclosed. The disclosed apparatus includes a non-volatile memory for storing data and a logic circuit for controlling access to the data contained in the memory. The logic circuit selectively accesses the memory to determine whether at least a portion of the data contained in the memory comprises confidential data by analyzing a property inherent in the accessed data. The disclosed method includes the steps of: defining a predetermined section of the programmable memory as a repository for confidential data; addressing the predetermined section of the programmable memory; calculating a number of data blocks in the predetermined section having a predetermined characteristic; comparing the calculated number to a threshold value; and defining the memory as including confidential data in the predetermined section if the calculated number has a predetermined relationship to the threshold value.

  • Publication number: 20020108116
Abstract: A satellite broadcasting system includes a multi-channel transmitter and a multi-channel receiver. The transmitter transmits data signals on first and second communication channels via satellite, and the receiver receives the data signals on the first and second communication channels. The receiver includes a tuner responsive to a selected communication channel indication for tuning in a particular one of the first and second communication channels identified by the selected communication channel indication. The transmitter transmits to the receiver on the particular communication channel based on the selected communication channel indication.

  • Patent number: 6430233
Abstract: A satellite data receiver, a satellite data receiver controller, a method, an article of manufacture, and a propagated signal, which process polarization information from another satellite data receiver in order to permit multiple types of signals to be received by a conventional outdoor unit of a satellite reception system. The satellite data receiver, satellite data receiver controller, method, article of manufacture, and propagated signal also utilize decoding techniques to ensure no data is lost during a polarization switch. The satellite data receiver, satellite data receiver controller, method, article of manufacture, and propagated signal provide upgraded service without upgrading the outdoor unit and without requiring an installer to enter the consumer's home.

  • Publication number: 20020073225
Abstract: A requesting terminal includes an interface that allows a user to select whether data downloaded from a network (such as the Internet) is transmitted to the requesting terminal via a high-speed link, such as a satellite link, or a lower speed link, such as a terrestrial link. Preferably, the terrestrial link (which may comprise a conventional dial-up Internet connection) is a two-way link, wherein the requesting terminal transmits data requests to the network via the terrestrial link. The data requests generated by the requesting terminal are modified to designate whether the requested data should be downloaded from the network via the terrestrial link or the satellite link. The terrestrial link may also be automatically selected for certain applications.

  • Publication number: 20020061021
Abstract: A multicast network system utilizes a high speed link, such as a satellite link, to multicast multimedia information from the Internet to a plurality of receivers, such as personal computers. Information from selected web sites is organized into “channels” and provided to a multicast network for multicast transmission to the receivers. Updated channel information is also periodically provided. The receivers store the received channel such that a user can access the web page content in the channel at hard disk speed. Preferably, a conditional access system ensures that only authorized receivers receive the channels. The present invention also preferably includes a lower speed two-way connection to the Internet (such as dial up modem) which is used to report usage information and/or subscription information back to the web sites.

  • Publication number: 20020059526
Abstract: A method and apparatus for broadcasting newsgroup information to a plurality of users uses a news server, which is in communication with the Internet, a newscast transmitter, a satellite gateway, and a subscriber station. The news server gathers newsgroup information from Internet newsgroups, and the newscast transmitter, in conjunction with the satellite gateway and a satellite, distributes all of the information to a plurality of subscriber stations. The subscriber stations preferably include personal computers equipped to receive broadcast newsgroup information. The subscriber stations each include a personal news server, storage media and a newsreader. The personal news server filters newsgroup information received based on subscription information stored only local to the receiver. The filtered newsgroup information is stored on the storage media for use at a later time when a user desires to read the newsgroup information.

  • Patent number: 6337911
Abstract: An electronic document delivery system and method in which a broadcast center periodically sends a “catalog” of available documents to a receiving computer, thereby allowing a user to browse through the available documents without having to access the broadcast center. The documents are transmitted as packets, and the packets are decrypted as soon as they are received, eliminating the need to store both an encrypted and an decrypted version of the documents at the receiving computer. The receiving computer periodically receives information allowing it to decrypt received documents and to encrypt billing information for the receiving computer. The invention is not limited to text-only documents and can receive all types of documents, such as software, images, text, and full-motion video.
