  • Patent number: 6273445
Abstract: An apparatus for joining an axle tube to a wheelchair frame includes a body coupled to the wheelchair frame by a coupling. An opening in the outer surface of the body is shaped and dimensioned to receive a projection on the axle tube to form a joint between the axle tube and the body. Alternatively, a joint may be formed by an opening in the outer surface of the axle that is shaped and dimensioned to receive a projection on the body. A wheelchair having a pair of spaced side frames has a body coupled to each of the side frames. An opening in the outer surface of each body is shaped and dimensioned to receive a projection on an axle tube to form a joint between the axle tube and each body. A pair of wheels each has an axle received by the axle tube.

  • Patent number: 6182992
Abstract: A wheelchair camber tube assembly for supporting rear drive wheels comprises a tube, an inner camber sleeve, an axle sleeve and a locking mechanism. The inner camber sleeve is slidably engageable within the tube. The inner camber sleeve has a central axis and a cylindrical bore. The said cylindrical bore has a central axis disposed at an angle relative to the central axis of the inner camber sleeve. The axle sleeve is rotatably engageable within the cylindrical bore in the inner camber sleeve. The axle sleeve has a central axis and an axle bore therein. The axle bore has a central axis disposed at an angle relative to the axle sleeve central axis. The locking mechanism is operatively engageable with the axle sleeve.

  • Patent number: 6168178
Abstract: A wheelchair comprises a frame and a chassis. The frame has two side frame members. The side frame members include upper frame members. The upper frame members have first and second mounting positions upon which the chassis may be mounted. The chassis has two mounting brackets. The mounting brackets are selectively attachable to respective upper frame members at the first and second mounting positions. The mounting brackets have lower ends that are structured and configured to rigidly support a rear wheel assembly when the mounting brackets are attached to the upper frame member at the first mounting position to provide a fixed chassis. When the mounting brackets are attached at the second mounting position, the lower end of the mounting brackets pivotally support a swing-arm assembly and suspension member to provide a suspension chassis. The same mounting brackets may be provided to construct each chassis or different mounting brackets may be provided to construct each chassis.

  • Patent number: 5727802
Abstract: A wheelchair frame includes a pair of side frame assemblies, a connector connecting the two side frame assemblies, a seat, caster wheel mountings, drive wheel mountings, and a leg rest mounting. Each of the side frame assemblies have an upper frame member and a lower frame member. The upper frame member is pivotally connected at its forward end to the forward portion of the lower frame member and supported at its rearward end by a suspension support member (i.e., shock absorber) connected to the rearward end of the lower frame member. The seat is attached between the upper frame members of each side frame assembly. With this configuration, the upper frame members and the seat are free to pivot about the pivotal connection between the upper frame member and the lower frame member. In operation, the upper frame members and seat "float" up and down on the shock absorber to provide cushioning to the user.
