Publication number: 20240145612Abstract: A waveguide assembly integrated with a semiconductor wafer is provided. The waveguide assembly includes a waveguide channel defined by internal walls of the wafer lined with a metallic layer, and having at least one port for transmission of the RF signal into or out of the waveguide channel. The waveguide assembly also includes a semiconductor obstacle member disposed in the waveguide channel. The waveguide assembly may be fabricated using etching and deposition processes for semiconductor devices. In use, selectively varying either one or both of frequency or power level of electromagnetic radiation applied to the obstacle member varies electrical conductance of the obstacle member, and thereby varies the electrical impedance of the obstacle member to transmission of the RF signal through the waveguide channel. The waveguide assembly may be used for switching, attenuating, routing, filtering, and transforming the RF signal.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 9, 2023Publication date: May 2, 2024Applicants: Purdue Research Foundation, The Governors of the University of AlbertaInventors: Thomas R. Patent number: 9531870Abstract: A method is provided for providing customized ring-back tones to callers on a wireline network such as a public switched telephone network having an advanced intelligent network or a VoIP network. When a call request is received from a calling party to connect to a called party through a wireline telephone network it is determined if the calling party is identified in a screening list for the called party. If so, then a customized audible ring-back tone is played to the calling party until the called party is connected to the calling party or until the call request is terminated.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 2014Date of Patent: December 27, 2016Assignee: Verizon Patent and Licensing Inc.Inventors: James E. Haley, Douglas R. Jones, John H. Wurster, Susan M. Middleswarth

Patent number: 9198202Abstract: A device obtains a geographic position of a mobile telephone. The device retrieves geographic locations associated with multiple different civic addresses from memory, and determines if the geographic position is within a certain proximity of one of the geographic locations. The device retrieves a civic address of the multiple different civic addresses, that is associated with the one of the geographic locations, from the memory for use in identifying the civic address at which the mobile telephone is located.Type: GrantFiled: May 18, 2010Date of Patent: November 24, 2015Assignee: Verizon Patent and Licensing Inc.Inventor: Douglas R. Patent number: 8705722Abstract: A system may receive configuration information relating to forwarding of communications in a network from a first endpoint to other endpoints. Presence information may also be received for the endpoints. The presence information may include proximity information indicating whether pairs of the endpoints are in physical proximity to one another. The system may forward communications destined for a first of the plurality of endpoints to a second of the plurality of endpoints based on the configuration information and the presence information.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2007Date of Patent: April 22, 2014Assignee: Verizon Patent and Licensing Inc.Inventors: Piotr Boni, Douglas R. Publication number: 20100158221Abstract: PSTN functionality is enhanced by the addition of an external service bridging device (ESBD) between one or more devices, e.g., signal switching points (SSPs), and a service control point (SCP). The ESBD serves as a coupling device to one or more control devices, e.g., other SCPs or IP servers, in addition to the SCP. To support the passing of messages between the SS7 network and the control devices, the ESBD includes message reformatting capabilities. The ESBD monitors for messages directed to SCPs and/or replies to messages directed to an SCP. In response to detecting a message the ESBD checks to determine if the detected message is to be processed or simply forwarded to the SCP. Messages to be processed are intercepted, duplicated, modified, replaced, broadcast, redirected, etc. Replies to broadcast query messages are detected and processed so that a single reply, in the format of an SCP response, is returned.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 1, 2010Publication date: June 24, 2010Applicant: VERIZON SERVICES CORP.Inventors: William D. Goodman, Douglas R. Jones

Patent number: 7734031Abstract: A service control point (SCP) (140) associated with a public-switched telephone network (PSTN) (110) includes a service logic module (210-N+1) and a network interface (215). The service logic module (210-N+1) enables the service control point (SCP) (140) to establish a connection with an Internet Protocol (IP) application server (120) via a transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) network (105). The network interface (215) communicates via the connection to integrate telephony services between the PSTN (110) and the TCP/IP network (105).Type: GrantFiled: May 20, 2004Date of Patent: June 8, 2010Assignee: Verizon Services Corp.Inventors: William David Goodman, James Edward Haley, Douglas R. Patent number: 7263182Abstract: In operational environments where local loop generation equipment is used, communication interruptions between a central office and a customer premises device is minimized by using a dedicated communications link between the local loop generation equipment and the central office. A processing mechanism at the central office determines if, when, and under what circumstances the customer premises device will be notified in response to the activation of local loop generation equipment. This eliminates the need to place local loop generation equipment in series with a communications path that runs between the central office and the customer premises. The central office may provide the dedicated communications link in the form of a telephone line which is equipped to place outgoing local calls, but not equipped to receive incoming calls, and not equipped to place long-distance calls.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2005Date of Patent: August 28, 2007Assignee: Verizon Services Corp.Inventors: Joseph Allen, Douglas R. Jones, Daniel J. O'Callaghan
