    Abstract: A wallboard comprising a gypsum layer and a cellulose-based layer comprising zinc oxide covering at least a portion of a surface of the gypsum layer is disclosed. The zinc oxide can be impregnated into the cellulose-based layer, or coated on a surface of the cellulose-based layer. The zinc oxide can also be incorporated into the gypsum layer. The zinc oxide can have a specific surface of from 2 m2/gram to 100 m2/gram. A method of making gypsum wallboard is also disclosed.
