Publication number: 20140358595Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for parking reservation that encourages car-pooling are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A processor, at a first mobile data processing system representing an automobile, receives an input to create a reservation for a parking location. A second mobile data processing system is detected, wherein the second mobile data processing system is within a threshold distance of the first mobile data processing system. A determination is made whether a movement of the second mobile data processing system relative to the first mobile data processing system is less than a threshold measure of the movement. Responsive to the determining being affirmative, a qualifier is applied to the reservation to obtain a benefit in the reservation, wherein the qualifier accrues a benefit to the reservation.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2013Publication date: December 4, 2014Inventors: Douglas Stuart Brown, John Falk Kelley, Todd Seager, Robert J. Torres

Publication number: 20140358596Abstract: A method, system, and computer program product for an environmentally-friendly parking reservation system are provided in the illustrative embodiments. A computer receives a request to make a reservation for parking a vehicle in a parking area. A parking location in the parking area is selected in an application, forming a selection. The computer modifies the selection based on a qualifier in the request, the qualifier indicating an environmentally-friendly aspect of the vehicle. The computer generates a response, the response identifying the parking location.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 31, 2013Publication date: December 4, 2014Inventors: Douglas Stuart Brown, John Falk Kelley, Todd Seager, Robert J. Patent number: 8555245Abstract: A modification method and system. The method includes retrieving by a computer processor of a computing system a list of features and plug-ins associated with an application. The features include features version metadata and the plug-ins include plug-ins version metadata. The computer processor compares features source code associated with the features with previous versions of associated source code. The computer processor generates modified features version metadata associated with the features version metadata. The modified features version metadata includes updated version labels differing from previous version labels of the previous versions of associated source code. The features are assembled into an application.Type: GrantFiled: February 5, 2010Date of Patent: October 8, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Firas Bouz, Anne Marie Brinkman, Douglas Stuart Brown, William Michael Higginbotham

Patent number: 8421824Abstract: An image generation method and system. The method includes receiving by a computing apparatus from a video recording device attached to a backside of a video monitor connected to the computing apparatus, a video data stream comprising a first video image of an input device connected to the computing apparatus and a second video image of a users hands enabling switches on the input device. An input device image associated with the input device is displayed. The computing apparatus super-imposes and displays a hand image associated with the user's hands over the input device image. The computing apparatus adjusts a brightness of the hand image such that the input device image is visible through the hand image.Type: GrantFiled: April 17, 2012Date of Patent: April 16, 2013Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Douglas Stuart Brown, John Falk Kelley, James Robert Rudd, Robert J. Patent number: 8326837Abstract: Embodiments for dynamically generating a portal site map may include determining a root node of a navigational construct of a portal site, where the root node has one or more child nodes. Embodiments may further include recursively crawling through the one or more child nodes of the root node to discover a composition subtree for at least one of the child nodes, the composition subtree comprising information relating to one or more portlets associated with at least one of the child nodes. Embodiments may further include generating a portal site map having an indication of the one or more child nodes and an indication of the one or more portlets associated with at least one of the child nodes. Further embodiments may include generating a portlet response based on the generated portal site map.Type: GrantFiled: March 28, 2008Date of Patent: December 4, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Douglas Stuart Brown, James Robert Rudd, Robert J. Patent number: 8140970Abstract: A method for displaying a virtual keyboard with a semi-transparent overlay of an end user's hands. The method begins by receiving a video signal comprising an image of a keyboard and at least one hand belonging to the end user. Next the method creates a virtual keyboard comprising an outline for each key residing in the image of the keyboard. After creating the virtual keyboard, the method sends to a computer screen the virtual keyboard overlaying on top of the image of the keyboard. The overlaying giving an appearance that keys residing in the image of the keyboard obscured by the end user's hand are now visible.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2009Date of Patent: March 20, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Douglas Stuart Brown, John Falk Kelley, James Robert Rudd, Robert J.
