  • Patent number: 11880237
Abstract: A wearable device has a housing containing electronics and a band that retains the wearable device on a user's arm. Each end of the housing has an open receptacle. The band has protrusions made from an elastomeric material and includes a rigid member arranged at least partially within. The protrusions are inserted into the receptacle to attach the band to the housing. A lower portion of the housing comprises two pieces that, when assembled, provide optical baffles between adjacent optical devices such as a heart rate monitor, and windows for the optical devices to operate. A thermal conductor is retained between the two pieces and facilitates operation of a temperature sensor in the device. An antenna carrier facilitates installation of an antenna without impairing fixation of an upper portion of the housing. A compact charger clips to the housing to supply power to recharge a battery in the wearable device.

  • Patent number: 11556185
Abstract: A system uses a barometer to determine both a user interface event and a change in elevation. Portable devices are often limited by space to provide a user with features that make a product useful. The system uses the barometer to measure air pressure within a cavity of a housing of a wearable device. The cavity is enclosed by a cover that appears as a physical button. The cover is attached to the housing by a flexible seal that allows the cover to move in response to changes in air pressure or physical touch. If movement of the cover causes a change in air pressure in the cavity beyond a threshold, the change is interpreted to be a user input event. Otherwise, the change in air pressure is determined to be a change in altitude. Using a barometer to determine user input allows for a compact wearable device.

  • Patent number: 10903612
Abstract: A dock includes a first section and a second section joined with a spring hinge assembly. An applied force opens the dock and a device may be placed within the dock. The first section includes a first concavity which approximately conforms to a top surface of the device. Within the first concavity is a ridge which comes into contact with part of the top surface of the device. The second section includes a second concavity within which a bottom surface of the device fits. Electrical contacts such as pogo pins within the second section come into contact with electrical contacts on the bottom surface of the device. Annular elastomeric features around at least some of the pogo pins have a top edge which may come into contact with the bottom surface of the device. The spring hinge applies a force that closes the dock, retaining the device therein.

  • Patent number: 7330178
Abstract: A portable electronic device includes a display-input apparatus (108) for displaying alternate character sets, in correspondence with a selected mode of operation of the device. The display-input apparatus uses first and second cholesteric display layers (302, 304) to display the different character sets. Each cholesteric display layer displays a different character set when active. When not active, the cholesteric display layer is rendered transparent.

  • Patent number: 7085140
Abstract: A housing assembly (100) and method (300) of assembly includes a housing (105) having one or more recessed areas (130) on at least a first side (120). Also included is a floor member (110) having one or more protrusions (135) and is pivotably mounted to one or more recessed areas on the first side using the protrusions. A tubular member (115) is included for engaging the floor member on a second side (125) of the housing where the engagement prevents the floor member from pivoting. The method of assembly includes engaging and pivotably mounting (310) a first portion of a floor member to a first side of a housing and pivoting (315) the floor member to an assembled position. The method further includes engaging (320) a second portion of the floor member by slidably introducing a tubular member through the housing and adjacent to a blocking structure of the floor member, thereby substantially preventing further pivoting of the floor member.
